Dog squeaks in pain after jumping or while resting. What should I do?

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | 8 years old

My dog has been sleeping the whole day. After he jumps down from the couch, he squeaks in pain. I don't know if it's his stomach or physical pain. He has been squeaking randomly even if he's sleeping/laying down. What do I do?

Thank you for more information on Shaggy's current symptoms. Squeaking in pain when jumping down from the couch can indicate a problem with his spine, neck, hips, or legs. He could be in pain when laying down, such as joint pain, again causing him to squeak. Because he is making painful noises when jumping, I would be more inclined to think it's a problem with his musculoskeletal system rather than his stomach or GI system. I would rest him tonight, no running, jumping, or playing. Take Shaggy out to toilet on a lead only and bring him right back in when he's done. Tomorrow morning, I would have him seen by a vet to diagnose what is causing him pain so he can be treated. Please do not give him any human pain medications as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. The vet can give him pain medications as needed.

Why is my dachshund in pain with a hard stomach and can't jump?

The abdominal pain and inability to jump may be a sign of spinal cord trouble. Seeing that Scruffy is is a dachshund, there is always a possibility that he has a slipped disk (Inter vertebral Disk Disease). This is very serious and time is of the essence. Please take Scruffy to a vet or Pet ER now. The longer you wait the worse the condition may get. This is also very painful. He could also have a serious tummy ache, which would need to be ruled out.

Why is my dog sleeping all day, won't get up, and randomly squeaking?

Poor Shaggy sound very lethargic! If he doesn't want to get up and is randomly squeaking, he could be in pain. Arthritis is very common in older dogs. I would take Shaggy into the vet for an exam first thing in the morning. The vet can diagnose if he is suffering from arthritis, and can give him some pain meds for it. Rimadyl (an NSAID) is a good drug to give to help with the symptoms of arthritis. I also recommend giving him glucosamine or chondroitin sulfate supplements. They provide the necessary nutrients for cartilage repair and function. Use of them helps relieve some of the symptoms of arthritis, and you can use it in conjuction with Rimadyl to help maximize relief from his symptoms.

Why is my dachshund yelping when jumping or going up stairs?

I agree that Bow seems to be in pain. Although the injury could be anywhere in his body, the big concern with his breed is an injury to the neck or spine. With their long bodies, Dachshunds are prone to back injuries. I recommend to have him seen by his veterinarian who will palate the neck, spine and legs to determine what area is injured. They will also try to determine if it is a soft tissue injury or related to the bones. Until you see the doctor, Bow must have strict exercise restriction. Do not allow him to do any more jumping, no running, no stairs, no walks and outside on a leash only. You must be cautious with a potential back issue as it can have serious consequences. Poor Maxx! He is a handsome boy. In Dachshunds, back problems are very common due to their elongated spine, and he could be painful at his back by his tail, leading to sensitivity when touched around that area. A painful back would keep him from jumping on the couch and whimpering when picked up. I would rest him tonight and tomorrow, no running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a lead, and bring him right back in when he's done. I would take him into the vet first thing Monday morning for a physical exam and x-rays. The vet can diagnose if he does have a problem with his back, and how best to treat it. Unfortunately, Dachshunds frequently need surgery to repair their back problems. I hope this helps!

Why is my dog yelping, shivering, and in pain when moving or jumping?

It could be abdominal pain as well as spinal pain. Sometimes spinal disease can have vague symptoms such as shivering or shaking. I would recommend that you have her checked over as there are some medications that will ease the pain immediately but it is essential to distinguish wether the symptoms described are related to a muscular condition,to osteoarthritis or to something more serious like an herniated disc in her spine. This last case is the worst scenario as it can worsen very quickly and determine paralysis. I hope you can have Ebby checked over ASAP and that it is nothing too serious.

Why is my small dog hunched, in pain, and yelping when jumping?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bundy. Has he been assessed for neck and/or back pain? This is common in small breed dogs. Symptoms can include a reluctance to move, jump or do stairs. Many walk with a hunched posture and will yelp when being picked up. The most common condition causing this pain is known as intervertebral disc disease. I would ask his veterinarian if this is a possibility. I hope this information helps!
