Why is my dog screaming in pain every time he tries to poop?

Thank you for submitting your question Haily. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian. She could have a sore anal gland due to an infection or impaction. If this is not the case, she could be constipated or even have arthritis in her hips or lower back making it painful to defecate. Her veterinarian will carefully examine her and determine the source of he problem. From there, treatment can be started to make her more comfortable. I hope this information helps!

Poor Bud'Dee! He could have eaten something that has gotten stuck trying to come out - this can happen if they eat fabric, hair, etc. I would look at his anus area and may sure there isn't poop hanging out that he can't expel of completely. If so, you can GENTLY pull and see if you can help him get it out. If it doesn't come easily, I would stop and take him to your vet. If you don't see anything, then I would just take him to your vet for them to check him out. It is obviously not normal for them to scream when he has a bowel movement. I hope this helps!

Your dog could have hip or back problems that make it painful to posture to defecate and would also make it hurt when her tail is manipulated. It could also be infected or inflamed anal glands. This condition is very painful and makes it difficult to defecate or even move. Without treatment, the gland may rupture, causing a open wound on your pet's rear that will require wound care and antibiotics as well as some pain relief. I recommend getting your pet seen by your vet. They will examine your pet, possibly do some x-rays and labwork and be able to give you a better idea of what is going on and how best to treat it.

Rex needs more fiber in his diet to bulk up the stool and make it softer. I would give a tablespoon of plain canned pumpkin with each meal. It will add both fiber and fluid. I recommend adding additional water in the food also as dogs that are dehydrated will also have hard stool. Make sure he’s not eating dirt and feed a good quality dog food two to three times daily. Oh no, poor Uno! It is very concerning that he is screaming when he is pooping and cries when you touch his back. I see that he is unneutered, and his constipation could be due to prostate problems. These prostate problems include benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostatitis, and prostate cancer. I would have him seen by a vet today for a physical exam, rectal exam, blood tests, and urinalysis. Should he have a prostate problem causing his constipation, neutering him is typically part of the recommended treatment.

Poor Louis! This can happen in some long-haired dogs, when poop becomes matted in the hair and stuck over the rectum. In many cases, the skin underneath becomes irritated and infected, and very sore when touched. I would recommend taking Louis to a vet today if you can - he/she can sedate him to allow the poop and matted hair to be clipped away without hurting him, and can also prescribe antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication for the skin underneath if needed.
