Why is my dog scratching and his old lump suddenly red and swollen?

Therefore, I would take Cooper to a veterinarian to perform a full physical exam and determine if is in fact a lump that needs to be tested or a wound/abscess or something else. Based on what it is, your veterinarian will determine the best treatment. Good luck!

A visit at your local vets is recommended to make the definite diagnosis (your vet may want to aspirate the lump with a needle to confirm the diagnosis) and to start treatment for Frank.

Even if your veterinarian has determined that this is a benign growth, you could consider removal from a palliative standpoint just to avoid further self-trauma of it. You could consider removal of any of the nodules that seem to be bothering Patch. Good luck!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I do recommend all abnormal growths be evaluated by a veterinarian to determine if they are benign (non-cancerous) or not. Skin growths can be due to a variety of reasons, including allergies, infection, allergies, warts, or true tumors. What type of growth it is typically can be evaluated by a needle sample by your veterinarian, and then a treatment plan can be made, if needed. Good luck!

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The lump there could be from many different causes: 1. infected ball of pus under the skin from a previous wound. 2. A foreign object stuck under the skin from the wound 3. A lump there unrelated to the wound (lipoma, tumor, etc.) 4. Scar tissue and non-infected inflammation secondary to the wound. 5. Other causes. From the image the little red bit is suggestive that there might be a component of infection/inflammation ongoing, but overall it doesn't appear very angry or inflamed. Ideally I would recommend having it seen, and your vet will likely put a needle into it to see if it is a ball of infection or something else. Otherwise, if it isn't bothering Chase you can monitor it for now, and if it is getting smaller/going away don't worry, but if it is growing or hasn't started to shrink in 5-7 days I would get it checked. I see what you mean about the red lump on Charlie's neck. It could be a cyst, a benign growth, or potentially a malignant growth if he's an older dog. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. A visit at your local vets is recommended to make the definite diagnosis and to start treatment for your dog. Your vet may have to take a needle aspirate from the lump to find out what kind of growth it is. Alternatively, treatment with steroids and antiseptic solution could be trialed first. If the growth responds to the treatment, it would strongly point towards the diagnosis of granuloma.
