Why is my dog scratching his butt and constantly chasing his tail?

There are several possible explanations for Rocky's tail licking and barking. If he's licking under his tail, it's possible that he could have full anal glands or worms. If he's licking at the top of his tail or the tail base, it's more likely that he's itchy from fleas or underlying allergies. It's possible that he's barking because he's agitated from being itchy or overstimulated from something else. Regardless, I think it would be best to take Rocky to your vet for an exam that will be able to assess the integrity of his skin and also to check his anal glands. Excessive licking can damage the outermost protective skin barrier, which can allow skin infections to develop, so it's best to get these issues addressed sooner rather than later. I see that he isn't neutered, and unneutered dogs are prone to anal tumors, which would also interfere with him passing feces. Finally, he could be biting his tail because he's suffering from fleas. Rocky has to see a vet for this, as it's quite serious he's biting his tail so much it's bleeding, he's yelping in pain, and hasn't pooped in two days. It looks as if your dog has a skin infection, most commonly caused by an allergy or fleas. The allergy could be a due to a protein in Rocky's food or an environmental allergy like to dust, pollens, grasses, etc. The allergy causes your dog to itch and chew at the skin which breaks down the skin barrier. This then leads to infection. Rocky will need antibiotics to help clear up the infection and possibly an anti-itch medication like Apoquel, Atopica, or Cytopoint to give some relief while the infection clears up. Since Rocky seems to continually have this problem he may need to be on an allergy medication long term. A medicated shampoo may be beneficial as well. Itching skin can sometimes be caused by intestinal parasites, but there are more common causes like fleas, mange, lice, infections (bacterial or yeast), ringworm, allergies, among others. I would recommend that Rocky be on a good flea preventative. You can also try a medicated shampoo like Dechra MalAcetic Ultra Shampoo, but if it doesn't help with the itching or scratching in a few days, I would recommend that he be re-checked by your vet for the new skin issues.

This behavior can be indication of impacted anal sacs or intestinal worms. Dogs rube their butt on the floor when it is itchy. I would have Rosco seen by a vet first thing in the morning, and be sure to bring along a sample of his feces so the vet can check for worms. The vet can diagnose what is causing him to have an itchy behind, and can treat him for it. Should he have worms, the vet can give him a deworming treatment. If he has impacted anal sacs, the vet can express them.

Hello. Itching, especially in the back end, is generally due to allergies, especially to flea bites, but there could also be some inflammation in the rectum itself. This can result from inflamed/infected anal glands or even the presence of intestinal parasites. Tank may still have fleas unless you are doing monthly flea prevention. He may also have impacted anal sacs, which would itch or hurt and make him scoot. I suggest you have him examined by your vet again. As impacted anal glands will need to be manually emptied to resolve the problem (not a big deal). These raw itchy spots may also be a sign of an allergy.
