Dog itching and biting feet after deworming. What should I do?

It looks as if your dog has a skin infection, most commonly caused by an allergy or fleas. The allergy could be a due to a protein in Rocky's food or an environmental allergy like to dust, pollens, grasses, etc. The allergy causes your dog to itch and chew at the skin which breaks down the skin barrier. This then leads to infection. Rocky will need antibiotics to help clear up the infection and possibly an anti-itch medication like Apoquel, Atopica, or Cytopoint to give some relief while the infection clears up. Since Rocky seems to continually have this problem he may need to be on an allergy medication long term. A medicated shampoo may be beneficial as well. Most often this behaviour is due to anal glands impaction or intestinal worms. Please, de-worm Rocky if he has not been de-wormed in the last 3 months. If it doesn't help, you will need to see your regular vet to get his anal glands checked.

I would consider trying a flea tick prevention in pill form. They could also be used off label for mites. I would also talk to your veterinarian about apoquel or cytopoint to treat Rocky’s allergies. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

The most common reason for change of skin color and itchy skin is fleas. I would recommend keeping up with a monthly flea prevention. Even if you are not seeing fleas on Rockey he could be bitten by fleas causing sensitivity of the skin. IF you are using flea prevention monthly than it is possible Rockey is having environmental allergies that need medication from a vet to resolve. I would recommend taking Rockey to a vet to make sure the skin is not infected and stronger medications are needed. hope that helps

Submit a stool sample to your veterinarian to diagnose the exact intestinal parasites Juju may have. The appropriate dewormer can be dispensed afterwards and repeated in 2 weeks. You'll need to submit another stool sample to confirm resolution. Keep him away from areas with feces and pick up his stool immediately to prevent reinvention. A monthly preventative, such as HeartGard, will protect against heartworm disease as well as the 3 most common intestinal parasites of dogs (hookworm, roundworm and whipworm). For the itch, use a monthly flea preventative, such as Frontline, K9 Advantix or Revolution, for at least three consecutive months. Do this even if you don't see any fleas. In a sensitive dog, just one flea bite may cause severe itching. Vacuum everywhere and wash all bedding. Use an area treatment, such as Knockout ES or Indorex, to treat fleas that may be living in the environment. You may need to have your veterinarian perform skin scrapes to check for mites which can cause itching and hairless. Discuss allergy testing, hydrolyzed diets, antihistamine use and food elimination trials with your veterinarian in case there is an allergic component to the itching.

It's not likely that a high amount of protein is causing the itching. It's possible the itching is related to drier skin, environmental allergy or food allergy. At home you can try giving him an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for pets but it may not correct the underlying cause. This can however improve over all skin health. There are two brands of food, Royal Canin and Nutro, which are aimed at skin health and they may help as well but again, they may not affect the underlying problem. If the itching continues, have Rocky checked by the veterinarian. Also, just so you know, most vets do not recommend to feed a grain free diet due to the potential link with heart disease. It sounds like he has roundworms. VERY common in puppies. The pyrantel is fine to use but I cannot speak to the dose as I don't know how many mg per ml it is. Use the dosing recommendations on the bottle. Puppies need to be dewormed with pyrantel at 8, 12 and 16 weeks of age when they get their vaccines. If he is still showing signs of worms after those three doses then he may need additional treatment. If he is itchy, at his age it is likely fleas or mites. I would treat him for fleas even if you don't see them on him.
