My dog is scratching, biting, and sleeping more after moving. Why?

With recent moving and travels they could have been exposed to fleas and if they are scratching they could have a flea allergy. You may not always find a live flea so it's not always easy to rule out. If you moved far, there could be an environmental allergy- something they have never been exposed to before. Also, changes in humidity and pressure can cause scratching. If their skin is red or they are keeping you up at night with the scratching I would recommend seeing a vet. It is probably worth getting her seen by your vet since any changes of behavior could indicate changes in her mentation, she could be getting hard of hearing and/or her sight may not be good. Since she barks when you aren't nearby, I suspect she may be losing her sight. That could be what is causing her to scratch, since maybe she can't see to get to the door as before. Also, the change in environment in the new home could be confusing her, especially if she lived for a long time at the old place.

He could also be experiencing an overgrowth of mites known as Demodex. This is diagnosed with a procedure known as a skin scrape. This tends to cause bald patches. In the meantime, you can bathe him with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner such as an oatmeal or fatty acid based formula to soothe the skin. Yes he could have allergies since you recently moved, especially if it is hot and humid there. There are lots of bacteria, molds and inhalant allergies that can cause the symptoms you describe. Generally most dogs will adjust to the new environment over several months and not need treatment. If Duke gets worse with the itching or starts more gagging or coughing then I would bring him in for a exam. Poor Chiko! There are many different things that could cause itching, scabs, and hair loss like this. Some common possibilities would include allergies (food allergies, or an allergy to something in the environment), a bacterial or fungal skin infection, or skin mites (mange). Treatment will depend on what the underlying problem is, so it's important to get a diagnosis first. Because of this, I would recommend taking Chiko to the vet tomorrow for an exam. He/she can do some simple skin tests if needed to help diagnose the problem and get him started on appropriate medication to treat it. In the meantime, you can try bathing him in an aloe and oatmeal dog shampoo if you want to - this will not treat the underying problem causing his symptoms, but may help to soothe his skin and make him a bit more comfortable until you are able to see the vet.

Hello, it could indeed just be behavioral or he may be sensitive to the type of detergent or softener that you are using at home and on your bedding. You could try to use something that is indicated for sensitive skin and see if this resolves his itchiness. Especially if it only happens when he is on the bed and going to sleep without any other signs prior to this scenario. Hope this helps and best of luck.

It could be that there is something in the home or the new environment that is causing Blondie to have a contact allergy. I would have her seen by a vet. It's not normal to have a rash for a couple of months, and it needs to be examined and treated. She may benefit from steroids and medicated shampoos for the rash, which the vet can prescribe. I would have her seen by a vet first thing Monday.
