My dog scratched its nose and mouth, now hair is gone. What's wrong?

Hello. I would really recommend having Betsy examined by your veterinarian. My guess is this is demodectic mange & this can be easily diagnosed with a simple procedure called a skin scrape. This may be from a scratch or rubbing. I would ignore it. Usually the hair regrows within a few weeks. However, if the hair loss increases, you should have it examined by your vet as this may be fungal or bacterial and may need specific treatment. (an antifungal, if caused by a fungus, an antibiotic if caused by bacteria.).

I am sorry to hear about your dog! If this is coming and going I would wonder if there is something he is occasionally getting into that he has an allergy to, such as a plant in your yard. Or perhaps he is getting a special treat/table scrap on the days he breaks out that he has an allergy to. I would recommend bringing him in during a flare up for his vet to examine him as we do worry when we have lesions develop along the edge of the nose about autoimmune disease, so he should be examined to ensure this isn't something that needs to be further investigated.

Common cause of hair loss include mites, ringworm and allergies. An allergy can be to something in her diet, environment or even fleas. The veterinarian will examine her and ask questions about her lifestyle. Skin testing may be recommended. Based on these results, treatment can be started. I hope this information helps!

I'm sorry to hear Fuwa if having skin issues. Lesions around the mouth can be due to allergies (food or contact), dental disease, a skin infection (bacterial or fungal), or an u determine medical issue. I would recommend he be evaluated by his regular veterinarian to determine the underlying cause for his skin lesion and come up with a treatment plan (dental procedure, antibiotics, anti-itch medication) that may be needed to help resolve it. From the photos it appears that the lesion is affecting both the mucosa of his nose and also his skin. This could be some sort of deep bacterial infection or perhaps something like ringworm (which humans can get). It is also very concerning however for an autoimmune condition. I recommend to have a Bosco visit his veterinarian with in the next day for an exam. The doctor may try treatment or testing for an infection. The doctor may also recommend a biopsy. These types of lesions are normally seen with a skin infection, but ringworm does not typically look like this. The fact that she has been licking more may be the reason for her developing a skin infection of her muzzle. These infections often develop when there is excessive moisture, or when something is irritating the muzzle. This can happen when their mouth has contact with a plant, or substance that irritates the skin. These type of infections are usually managed well at home with daily cleaning. I recommend rinsing the are with cool water, then wiping it with a medicated wipe (can get this at the pet store). It's best if you can do this twice a day. If the lesions are not starting to heal after a week of treatment, or are getting worse, then I recommend taking her to the vet. The vet will be able to diagnose the specific cause of this and provide the best treatment. I hope that helps and Little Bear gets better soon.
