Dog's paws scraped from running on concrete? How to treat and prevent licking?

If there are no open wounds soak her feet in a epsom salt soak for a few minutes and rinse well. If there is any open wounds, peeling of paw pads or oozing then she need to see a vet. There are booties you can buy to protect her feet if she is out playing on rough ground. Do not walk her on pavement if it is hot to the touch. Some dogs may lick their feed due to allergies or contact irritation. Keep her feet clean and dry. Wiping her feet with a damp cloth after walking can help remove surface irritants.

An e-collar (cone) will go a long way in aiding in healing. Keep it on until the wound is completely healed. Limit activity to just leash walks for elimination. Avoid excessive running jumping or rough play. That looks like a bit of a sore! I would keep the area clean and dry and place an Elizabethan (cone) collar on Blossom to keep her from licking the spot which can lead to secondary infection. If the wound worsens or begins to ooze debris, swells, or becomes very hot or painful to the touch, these can all indicate an infection that should be treated by your vet. If the concrete play area is outside, it can heat up very quickly in the summertime, which may lead to burns or sores on the feet in addition to abrasions. Making sure to have a cool, shaded play area as well as mats or other items that can help soften the surface can help reduce chances of injury in the future.

Poor Oscar! Running around on the blacktop can cause a lot of trauma to the skin as you have unfortunately found out. You must protect the paw from licking as this will make it worse. He should wear an Elizabethan collar at all times. He should also only be allowed to walk on soft surfaces and can not have any running until the paw is healed. The concern with injuries on the foot is that they can become infected since they are constantly making contact with the ground. I recommend to have him examined by his veterinarian who may bandage there paw and give you a topical treatment or even antibiotics. Also make sure she does not lick at the feet (have her wear an elizabethan collar at all times) and keep her on soft surfaces with no walks, running or jumping until the tissue is fully healed. You can apply a dab of coconut oil and rub it in well. Make sure she does not lick this as it can cause GI upset. You can also purchase the balm that mushers use on sled dogs. Hello. The only way to prevent these is to use booties on Jack's paws, but if he is not licking his feet, nor does he seem uncomfortable or limps, then I do not think he needs the booties. I would be washing his feet every day, either with a dilute Povidone Iodine or Chlorhexidine solution. Wipe his feet with the solution, then dry with a soft towel without rinsing.
