My dog has scabs and hair loss under her chin. What should I do?

It looks like he has mange. What you are doing for treatment won't hurt but it won't help either if mange is the diagnosis. I cannot diagnosis him from a photo. I suggest you ask your vet about the possibility of mange and get testing/treatment for that.

Unfortunately, there can be many causes. She could be experiencing a bacterial or yeast infection. She could also have fleas, mites or allergies. The veterinarian will ask detailed questions about her lifestyle, any previous skin disease and diet. Then she will be thoroughly examined. Skin tests may help her doctor reach a diagnosis. Based on these results, treatment can be prescribed. In the meantime, I would bathe her with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner such as an oatmeal or fatty acid based formula. This can help to soothe the skin. I suspect she will need prescription medications to fully heal though. I hope this information helps!

It could just be scab or is could be another issue. An allergy, mite infection, bacterial infection, feline acne, or fungal infection could all be possibilities. You can put 3% hydrogen peroxide on the area and if it doesn't improve in a few days, Maddie may need to see her veterinarian for a few skin tests to rule out causes (mentioned above). If antibiotics and antifungals have not helped, it is possible that Pickle has mange. The oral flea and tick preventatives simparica, Nexgard and Bravecto are often effective in treating demodectic mange and can be purchased from your veterinarian. If that doesn’t help, having a skin biopsy performed either at your veterinaian or with a veterinary dermatology specialist at a specialty hospital would likely be the next best course of action. Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. What you are describing could be due to allergies or a skin infection. I would recommend starting a shampoo such as Douxo PS chlorhexidine combination shampoo and bathe twice weekly. I would also recommend welactin omega 3 fish oil, essential 6 spot on by dermoscent and malacetic conditioning spray. If this does not imprive the current problem or it worsens, i would have a veterinarian look at this for further trestment recommendations. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. You are absolutely correct that mange or allergies are possible. The doctor may recommend a diagnostic called a skin scrape to check for mites. For now just protect the area from any itching. It doesn’t look really inflamed so I’m not sure there’s much you can do at this point. As a general recommendation, starting Lexi on an omega 3 fatty acid for dogs can help improve skin health and it certainly won’t hurt anything. Poor guy, he does look miserable. You did not indicate if he has had a skin scraping. It really looks suspicious of a type of mange caused by the Demodex mite. This is NOT a contagious form of mange like Sarcoptic mange....so Ben may have it and his sister could be fine. Demodex presents as very red skin with hair loss. If he had not been checked for this, that is the very first thing to do.
