What's causing my untamed dog's scabbing and hair loss?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Jimmy. He appears to have widespread skin disease. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian for proper diagnosis and treatment. He may need skin scrapes to look for mites, a fungal culture to rule out ringworm or a medication trial for allergies. Allergies can be the result of something in his environment, diet or even fleas. You can start by bathing him with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner such as an oatmeal or fatty acid based formula to help soothe the skin. I still think that he will need prescription medications though. I hope this information helps!

This can be caused by bacterial or fungal skin infections such as ringworm, skin mites, or autoimmune diseases. I recommend having your dog seen by a vet as ringworm can be transmitted to people. Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Bacterial or sometimes fungal infections of the skin can cause the hair to come out in clumps along with a scab. Certain endocrine disorders like hypothyroidism and autoimmune diseases can cause similar symptoms as well. It is hard to say exactly what the bump on the neck may be. This could be sebaceous cyst, an abscess, or small mass. It would be a good idea for TImberlynn to have an exam and evaluation done with her veterinarian. Your veterinarian may take a small sample of the mass to determine if it is concerning and needs to be removed. Your veterinarian may recommend antibiotics and/or blood work be done to rule out endocrine diseases as a cause as well. I hope this helps and thanks again for posting!

Hello. Toby has a type of dermatitis going on, but the underlying cause cannot be determined just from a photo. It could have a bacterial, autoimmune, fungal or even parasitic ( mange mites ) cause. Your veterinarian can use a couple of rather simple diagnostic aids ( skin scrapes, hair plucks, dermatophyte cultures ) to determine the cause of the hair loss & lesions, then the correct treatment can be started to resolve this. Scrappy needs to go to your veterinarian for an exam and skin scraping to determine the cause of this skin condition. It looks like a bacterial infection but he also could have mites, a fungal infection or it could be an autoimmune disease or tumors. If it's a severe bacterial infection with antibiotics and medicated baths this should improve. The longer he has these lesions the more likely the skin can become damaged and his fur may not grow back in. In addition to the skin scraping they may recommend a thyroid level test and perhaps a blood panel to check for other underlying disease. I would be concerned that this could be some form of immune mediated disease or a reaction to something in the environment or medication or perhaps an infection of some sort. I recommend that you have Bella evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and treat accordingly. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bubba! How old is Bubba? A lot of skin conditions can look the same. But from your photos I think either a skin infection from yeast or bacteria, ring worm or demodex (non-contagious mite). If he is older I recommend having blood work done, some systemic illnesses can manifest in the skin. If he has a skin infection then medicated shampoo and antibiotics or antifungals are needed. If demedex is suspected, especially if he is young, than your Vet will perform a skin scrape to look for the mite under the microscope. Thankfully demodex is very easy to treat these days with the new oral flea and tick medications (Nexgard and Bravecto). Ring worm is diagnosed with a cultured and is treated with either lyme sulfur dips or oral antifungals. I think it is best to make an appointment with your Vet when they open on Monday and start medications based on your Vet's diagnosis. I hope this helps and I wish you and Bubba the best!
