Why is my dog losing hair on his head and cheek, no fleas or ticks?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I recommend a vet visit for Toby to assess the cause of his hairloss. Hairloss can be from allergies, parasites, endocrine disorders or breed related alopecia. Depending on what the veterinarian finds during Toby's exam they may recommend diagnostic testing to look for a primary skin disorder or bloodwork to check for endocrine (such as thyroid or adrenal gland) abnormalities. Hi. For Toffee's skin looks pretty severe with redness, hair loss, and what looks like dermatitis. He most likely has an underlying allergy. This can be to the protein in the food, or environmental allergens. Other possibilities for this presentation include a deep skin infection, ectoparasites, immune mediated conditions, or low thyroid. No matter the cause, it looks like he may be pretty miserable. He will need a exam and prescription medications from your veterinarian, a long with some skin testing to try to find the cause. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bubba! How old is Bubba? A lot of skin conditions can look the same. But from your photos I think either a skin infection from yeast or bacteria, ring worm or demodex (non-contagious mite). If he is older I recommend having blood work done, some systemic illnesses can manifest in the skin. If he has a skin infection then medicated shampoo and antibiotics or antifungals are needed. If demedex is suspected, especially if he is young, than your Vet will perform a skin scrape to look for the mite under the microscope. Thankfully demodex is very easy to treat these days with the new oral flea and tick medications (Nexgard and Bravecto). Ring worm is diagnosed with a cultured and is treated with either lyme sulfur dips or oral antifungals. I think it is best to make an appointment with your Vet when they open on Monday and start medications based on your Vet's diagnosis. I hope this helps and I wish you and Bubba the best!

If it is bothering Toby to the point where he is chewing / licking it raw, I would recommend bringing him to a veterinarian to have this examined so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Jimmy! He has pretty bad skin disease. You can't tell the cause by just looking at the skin but a few possibilities are Demodex or Scabies (both are mites), ring worm (fungal infection), bacterial skin infection (from allergies to environment, food or atopy) or fleas. Jimmy needs to be examined and have few tests done to see what is causing the scabbing and hair loss. I wish you the best!

There are two types of mange: Sarcoptic and Demodex, both of which have different causes 1) Sarcoptic Mange: This is a mite that can be contagious to other dogs, cats AND people. Dogs get this from direct contact with another infected dog. Dogs with this type of mange can become very itchy with lots of hair loss and red flaky skin. It can be anywhere on the body and spread throughout the body without proper treatment. Diagnosis is via a skin scrape and how well the dog responds to treatment. Treatments range from dips, injections, oral drugs, and topical medications depending on the severity of the mange. 2) Demodex Mange: This is a mite that is normally found on dog's skin but only causes an issue when there is too much of it on the skin. Most dogs with this mange are younger with immature immune systems or dogs that are sick/immunocompromised. This is NOT a contagious mite. Dogs with demodex have patches of hair loss a lot of the time around the head, eyes, ears or it can be all over. Typically the skin underneath is calm and not red. Dogs can or can not be itchy with this mange. However, in severe cases of demodex, dogs can be very itchy and have lots of hair loss. Diagnosis is also made via skin scrape. Treatment is very easy with oral medication, sometimes a dip or ointment depending on the severity. I would recommend visiting your veterinarian to determine the type of mange Toby may have. I would not use Borax or Peroxide directly on his skin as it can irritate it more and make him more itchy. Your veterinarian will be able to provide you a better treatment plan. In the mean time you may consider benadryl. Please post a picture of your pets hair loss so that we can better help you with recommendations and possible causes for her hair loss. Hair loss in general can be caused by: Flea allergies (always a possibility if your pet is not on a high quality flea flea preventative), thyroid disease, allergic dermatitis (environmental or food related), seasonal Alopecia (due to genetics), or even a bacterial or skin infection. Starting with a skin scrape and skin impression through your vet, along with a thyroid test (if your pet meets the criteria) is usually the best place to start when trying to find out the cause.
