Can my dog safely be around pet-safe diatomaceous earth?

It is not recommended to use the diatomaceous earth directly on pets because it can cause small abrasions to the skin and is a risk to be inhaled into the lungs (which can cause damage to the lungs). Diatomaceous earth can be applied to the yard and application varies based upon rain levels and soil moisture. There are much more effect ways to deal with fleas. A monthly topical or oral tablet are the best methods to control fleas and in general, the property does not need to be treated unless there is a heavy flea burden. The good thing is that this is a rather safe product for Blu to have eaten. The biggest concern is if he inhaled some, because it can be quite irritating to the lungs. If he is coughing excessively, then it would be good to take him to the vet for treatment. If he is otherwise acting normal, then no need to worry much. Diatomaceous earth has actually been fed to dogs before in hopes that it helps with certain infections and is not toxic. The only concern would be that he ate enough to cause a blockage in the stomach or intestine. You would know that it's causing a blockage if Blu is vomiting and acting painful/lethargic. The few licks of diatomaceous earth should not cause any toxic effects in your husky. Some farmers actually add this to livestock or horse food! I would just monitor your dog for GI upset, but I wouldn't expect any issues from a small amount of this product.

It can be sprinkled around the environment to kill fleas and flea eggs in it. A simple shampoo of Dawn dish soap and a flea comb can also be used to kill fleas on the body and make them easier to remove without the use of harmful chemicals.

Cats can be very sensitive to strong smells, so it’s possible he is reacting to something in the environment. Fortunately, this is not a sign of permethrin poisoning, or a reaction to your cream. It’s also possible that Isis is developing an upper respiratory infection, but they tend to sneeze much more than you reported. I’d recommend searching for any strong smells in the house and removing them at this time. I don’t see a need to rush to the vet from what you have described, but if you notice an increase in sneezing and/or nasal, or eye discharge, then it would be best to have him seen by your vet.
