Are my dogs safe from coyotes if I have a 5-foot fence in my yard?

I doubt a fox will be interested in eating your dogs. If you want to make sure foxes do not get into the enclosure, I would bury the fence about a foot underground around the enclosure and make sure it is at least 6 ft high, maybe with the wire bent outward. . This should be very fox and dog proof at the same time.

It would depend on how "hot" the fence is. If it is a livestock fence, the charge may be considerable to a small dog. Contact the fence company and ask what settings would be safe for dog, yet effective for larger animals. If that doesn't work, contact Animal control and find out how you can legally (if owned) prevent them from entering your yard or have them come and capture the cats (strays or ferals). You can also purchase noise deterrents that are turned on my motion. Maybe over time the cats will avoid your yard if they find it "scary." I wish you and barney the best!

I would recommend keeping your dog inside for the next few days with limited supervision in the backyard until you know the fence will keep your dog in with no issues. Once you personally observed your dog running around for a few hours at a time and know there are no issues it may be OK to let him be outdoors unsupervised again.

From what you're describing, it sounds like the only really reliable solution here would be to put up a fence to keep the neighbor's dogs out. If they are consistently trespassing on your property and attacking your dog in your yard, you can also call your local animal control office to report this - they should be able to fine the owner for not keeping his dogs under control, or even confiscate the dogs if this continues to happen. For your part, I would make sure that you take Sam out on a leash at all times unless you have a fence, so that he can't trespass on your neighbor's property and get into fights.

The better question is how much risk are you willing to take? There is a risk to animals on the other side of the fence, animals moving the poison onto your side of the fence, rats moving the poison to your side of the fence, or rats dying from the poison and your dogs eating the dead rat and the poison in its body. There is a product called RatX that does not use poison, instead it uses non-toxic ingredients that will alter the ability for a rat or mouse to absorb water and it will die. While I would not want a pet to eat very much of it, it is much safer than anticoagulant rodenticides or products containing bromethalin.
