My new dog is sad, not eating after leaving her puppies. What to do?

Poor little thing. It can take some time for dogs that are scared and poorly socialized to adjust. I find that it can be a big help and confidence booster for them to see you interact with another dog. Sometimes they can also relate better to having another dog around. That being said, this should be a calm, easy going and non threatening dog to her. Perhaps an adult sweet friendly dog that is a similar size. It is important for her to eat and drink, so you may have to put those things in her kennel where she feels safe for now. Continue to be patient, talk in a calm and gentle voice and she will eventually learn to trust you. She lacks confidence right now and that does not come overnight, I would consider having her interact with you and another dog if it is the right dog.

If she seems fine otherwise with a good activity level, I recommend you try a highly palatable diet such as the Purina Pro Plan shredded blends or potentially consider adding pieces of boiled chicken or dog grade gravy to make her current diet more palatable. This is likely going to work for you. If at some point, she appears to not be doing well, have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment. Good luck!

Hopefully you brought with you a few familiar items with you from Honey's previous home, like a blanket or bed. Make sure she has access to that. Offer her plenty of cuddles and attention. Offer her usual food and treats from your hand, to help gain her trust. If Honey is used to a crate, make sure you use a similar one in your home. Place her bed in there and she should quickly be drawn to it as a place of comfort and safety. I'd also look into a product called Adaptil, which is a canine pheromone that can help reduce stress and anxiety in new environments. Give it time. It is a difficult phase for Honey right now, but she should gradually get used to her new home and learn to love her new family, if you are patient, consistent, and offer her a nurturing loving home! Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Nala! The crying is normal for an 8 week old puppy in a new home. The vomiting and diarrhea is not normal and is not anxiety. Possible causes of vomiting and diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, viral (especially parvo) or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion, reaction to new food/treats or a food allergy. Nala is very young and small. Not eating well combined with vomiting and diarrhea predisposes her to dehydration and low blood sugar risks. I highly recommend having her seen today and bring a stool sample. Also bring any paper work indicating recent vaccinations and dewormings. I wish you and Nala the best!

Congratulations on your new addition! I'm glad to hear that Champ is very well-behaved. It's never a big surprise when a new pet refuses to eat or drink well when they're first brought to a new home. This change can be quite stressful and intimidating to them, and can evoke a bit of anxiety, leading to this refusal to eat or drink. First of all, try to give Champ as much space as he wants. You can offer him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for a few days to try to tempt him to eat, then gradually mix in his regular dog food. When you offer him food, try to do so in a quiet, calm environment where he can eat undisturbed by people or other pets. Initially, he'll probably be more willing to eat and drink when he's alone. My guess is that he's drinking some water when you aren't watching - particularly if he's urinating normally. Try to work on giving Champ a safe space where he can always go if he wants to be alone, such as a crate or a bed in the corner of a quiet room, and respect his boundaries by always leaving him alone if he's in that space. Building up on this safe space can help a dog feel more comfortable and confident in their surroundings, which in turn will likely facilitate normal behaviors, including eating and drinking. Sounds like its been a very stressful situation for Dalila. It may take some time for her to get used to her new surroundings. At home, you can try things such as a pheromone diffusing collar/plug in to help her calm down some, or even play a soothing talk radio or TV show when you are away. Distraction through extra play sessions, puzzle and chew toys, etc may also help her cope with the change. If the anxiety continues, or worsens, talking with your vet or a local veterinary behaviorist is best as they may be able to suggest additional training tips or even provide a medication to help reduce her anxiety while she adjusts.

This will usually resolve over time. If Kali remains lethargic or not acting herself for longer than a week, she should be seen by a veterinarian as another medical issue could be present.
