Is a stray dog's ruptured testicle with exposed tissue treatable?

Unfortunately, it is illegal for us to prescribe any medications without physically examining the pet. Swelling of the scrotum could be caused by a bacterial or viral infection, tumor, wound, or an abscess. The treatment for these varied problems depends on the cause. I would recommend that you call your local animal control office so that they can catch the stray and get him the care he needs to prevent suffering.

Without at least seeing a photo it is difficult to give advice. This could be a serious issue or it may be just some scrotal dematitis. This is usually very easy to treat so I'm not sure why you say the vet can't help you with a solution. Honestly, the only permanent solution is to have him neutered. This issue doesn't happen in neutered dogs. This could be a recurring issue because him scrotum is staying too wet. Do you keep him in a kennel? Is he laying in his urine a lot? You can try this over the counter antiseptic spray to see if that helps. You need to spray the scrotum 3-4 times per day in the beginning and once it starts to look better you can decrease to twice a day and then once a day. You may have to continue using it every couple days as a prevention or until you can figure out why he keeps getting this. ( ) Also, no matter what you use to treat the scrotum, it will not get better if you allow him to lick it. There is nothing OTC you can give safely. Many human medications are toxic to dogs or easily overdosed. The best you can do now is place an e-collar (cone) on Murphy to prevent licking and keep the area clean. You can use a diluted betadine or chlorhexidine solution to clean the area gently. Murphy is likely in dire need of antibiotics (and pain management) so get him in as soon as possible. The area should be biopsies to rule out any cancer given Murphy's age and the condition. I do recommend he is seen by a vet to determine what’s going on. Being an older, intact male, I would be worried about something going on in his testicles or prostate. In the meantime, you could try applying a cold compress to his scrotum for 10-15 minutes a few times today to see if that helps with the swelling. After 24 hours, I would switch to a warm compress (not hot). If that doesn’t improve, I would recommend an exam. Good luck and kisses to Cutler!

If the skin was damaged to the point that the testicles are exposed your dog must be seen by a veterinarian right away to assess whether the testicles can be saved and repaired, or whether he needs to have the damaged testicle(s) removed. This will likely also be infected. Please take your dog to a Pet ER now.

You can treat this at home. 1. Make sure his environment is always clean and dry. 2. Get this topical spray hydrogel and apply it to the affected area 2-3 times per day until healed. If he starts to lick the scrotum, the problem will get worse or may not heal. He needs to wear it until the scrotum is back to normal. Yes, I recommend neutering and removing both testicles. This can be a genetic problem so you don’t want to breed him. The testicle that is in the abdomen has an increased chance of developing testicular cancer in the future so removing now is best. This surgery is more like spaying a female dog, with only a slightly longer recovery than a typical male dog neuter.
