My dog has a ruptured Achilles. Are affordable braces available?

So, this is not a simple answer because braces for ACL tears are not as easy to work with in dogs as they are in people. For a knee brace to work in a dog, it needs to be custom made which requires a vet to make a cast from Shamus' leg and mail that to the company to make the brace. They braces cost about $800, but that does not include casting or fitting fees. The best treatment is surgery. There are some dogs that may respond ok to rest and pain medications or a brace (mypetsbrace.com) but in the end most do best from surgery. Braces are rarely used if surgery is an option. In small dogs, they are not usually needed. Braces can cause some issues because the fit has to be absolutely perfect to avoid rubbing the skin or causing other joint damage. The best thing to do is “bed rest” and pain medications as prescribed by your vet.

Wrapping the leg is unlikely to help and an improperly applied bandage could actually do more harm than good. You could look into a custom brace - these along with physical therapy can be successful although they can cost nearly as much as surgery. Otherwise I’d recommend following your vet’s recommendations for medical management.

Dawson looks like a sweetheart! No, unfortunately there is no kind of brace that is going to help his spinal issues or cruciate ligaments. If his cruciate ligaments are actually torn/damaged, the only cure is surgery to repair them, and he may not be a good surgical candidate for this at his age and size. I would make sure he is on pain medication if he seems painful at all, like Tramadol, Gabapentin, or other medications that can be safely combined with the prednisone. Also consider joint protectants like Cosequin and other modalities like acupuncture and laser therapy. I have seen acupuncture help alleviate pain and increase mobility in dogs like Dawson pretty frequently. Hope that helps!

I am so sorry to hear about your puppy! Unfortunately it appears she has a tibial crest avulsion, and the treatment of choice is surgery if you want to have Bailey have the ability to use her leg normally. Unfortunately orthopedic surgeries do cost a great deal of money to perform and so vets have to charge accordingly. You can always see if there is a veterinary school in your area that may offer the surgery at a lower cost, but that isn't always a gaurantee.

A full assess ment and xrays would be needed in order to determine if a brace is likely to help but if the condition is ongoing and the bnes have already moved it may be more painful to adjust them (it may help support the ligaments if there is no underlying bne issue).
