Why does my dog have a rough, painful patch on her elbow?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 9 years and 6 months old | 55 lbs

My dog has a patch of what i can only describe as strawberry texture on her elbow area. It is rough feeling and it bothers her when i touch it. it looks between a calus, scrape, or other type of skin condition however she has not been scratched.

Hello. Based on your pictures, it does look like Boo has developed an elbow callus. These happen when there is too much pressure when lying on a hard surface. Try to encourage Boo to rest on more padded surfaces, but generally require little more to treat. But I do recommend letting your veterinarian take a look at Boo's elbow at your earliest convenience just in case something else is amiss that would only become apparent after a hands on examination. However, one way to try to prevent it from getting any worse would be making sure to have a dog bed and well padded surfaces throughout the house as this forms from laying on hard surfaces. This is likely just a callus which happens commonly at the elbow joint given it is a pressure point due to the presence of a bone in that region. I would not be too concerned about this. However, if you ever notice any discharge or open wound in this region, have him evaluated by a veterinarian as that can be an infection. Best of luck!

My dog has elbow calluses. How can I prevent or treat them at home?

This is a developing elbow callus. Large dogs often develop these because they flop down on hard surfaces and the irritation causes a callus to develop. To prevent this from getting bigger I recommend having many soft beds available where Bruno likes to lay so he doesn’t keep irritating the area. In very large breed dogs elbow calluses can be a normal development from the amount of weight put on the elbow when they lay down. Why does my dog have hairless patches on her elbows and ankles?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The first picture is hard to make out. The 2nd looks like a callus on the ankle. The last picture is normal in dogs and is the elbow callus. If Zenalda is not scratching and isn't missing hair elsewhere, it is normal to have thick hairless skin at pressure points. Is she starts losing hair elsewhere I would have her checked for either a skin infection, ring worm or mites. Hope this helps!

My German Shepherd has rough patches on her elbows. What are they?

If Samantha lays on mostly hard surfaces that could explain why hers are more pronounced. But the fact they are on both sides and look the same indicates they are likely normal for her. My dog has sudden dry, thick skin on his elbows. What could it be?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It looks like a pressure sore. Some dogs develop this dry, thickened skin around the 'bony' part of the legs. It usually happens to bigger dogs that often lie on hard surfaces. Please, try to use olive oil or a thick cream on the changes twice a day for 3-4 weeks. if it doesn't help, you will have to take Kovu to your local vets for an appointment.

My dog has dark spots on her legs. Are they calluses? Should I worry?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is hard to see well on these pictures but these look like calluses at the elbow. These are just basically the result of pressure on bony protuberances like the elbow. These are very common in large breed dogs like Labrador Retrievers. You can add more bedding for her to lay down. Otherwise, if no discharge or inflammation occur, it is ok to just monitor this. Good luck and have a good day!
