My dog is reverse sneezing. What causes it and does he need meds?

Reverse sneezes are relatively common in dogs and are usually due to an allergen or sometimes can occur during periods of excitement. Reverse sneezes do not typically require medications to treat, unless an underlying allergy is suspected then an antihistamine may be prescribed by Nova's veterinarian. Many cold medications that are over the counter can be potentially toxic to dogs and should never be given unless specifically directed by Nova's veterinarian. It may be a good idea for Nova to see her primary care veterinarian to make sure what she is experiencing is just a reverse sneeze and not a symptom of something else, such as an upper respiratory infection. Reverse sneezing isn't particularly linked to vaccinations or to heartworm medication. It is simply irritation of the throat (larynx) due to possible allergies or irritation of the throat from a foreign object. I would recommend monitoring her today to see if the reverse sneezing resolves on its own within 24 hrs. As long as she isn't acting ill, eating, drinking well then its ok to monitor. If the sneezing fits don't seem to be resolving on their own, then its best to contact your vet who will likely recommend a short course of antihistamines to try next. A reverse sneeze can be caused by irritants in the upper airway region so if there has been an increased amount of dust in the air this could potentially be causing the symptoms you are seeing. An environmental allergy or an upper respiratory infection could also lead to these symptoms. A reverse sneeze should resolve within a short amount of time. However, if it persist or worsens, I would have a veterinarian examine him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Usually you can just leave Rosko be until it stops. You can also try lightly blowing in his face. When you do this, it causes him to swallow a few times which should stop the reverse sneezing. If this is a consistent problem, then I would have him seen by a vet to have it treated. I hope this helps!

If he continues to do so it would be a good idea to get him checked. Reverse sneezing is usually meant to clear the nasal passages of irritants so if he can't clear what is bothering him it may mean he has something else going on that induces these sneezing episodes. Pay attention when he does it to see if there is something in common with each incident that may be causing or contributing to the reverse sneezing that you can pass along to your vet, even video it if you get the chance.

Reverse sneezing is caused by irritation of the nasal cavity and/or larynx which an be allergy related or even caused by a nasal mite in rare cases. Yes pets can seem to be trying to vomit, but this is really them trying to scratch the irritated area. If she is doing this more frequently than comfortable with and does not respond well to offering her water during the event, then a vet visit is recommended to perhaps start her on allergy medicine and to check her for possible nasal mites. However, in most cases pets don't require any treatment for reverse sneezing episodes b/c they are infrequent and don't impede on the quality of life of the pet. Hi there! Usually reverse sneezing is caused by nasal mites which are microscopic bugs that invade the nasal cavity. It could also be allergies. I’d have your vet check Molly lungs just to be safe and get her started on nasal mite medicine. Some prefer ivermectin which is oral for 3 weeks, others use different medication.
