Can my dog get a respiratory problem from swimming in cold lake water?

Hello. It does not sound like anything is too serious with Frankie. If there was any aspiration pneumonia from the water, his symptoms would be worsening, not be intermittent. He may have swallowed a bit more pool water than normal that irritated his stomach or esophagus. He may be regurgitating a bit just from this alone. As long as he seems pretty normal, his resting respiratory rate is between 30 - 40 breaths per minute, then he may just have irritated things & should do fine in a few days. But if the coughing worsens, then this may be a case of tracheobronchitis that might respond very nicely to anti-inflammatory medication & an antibiotic. Has her veterinarian discussed the possibility of an upper respiratory tract infection or the more serious case of pneumonia? She may need antibiotics. I hope this information helps!

She may have a cold. If she is that uncomfortable with the coughing then I would recommend bringing her to a veterinarian to have them evaluate her. Poor Bo! I'm sorry to hear that he's having this problem. No, an infection would not show up within a few hours of exposure - the incubation period for most respiratory diseases is at least 3-7 days. There are many things that could cause coughing in an older dog like this, including heart disease, bronchitis, allergies, laryngeal paralysis, an infection, or even some type of cancer. Since it sounds like he has been coughing on and off for a while now, I would recommend taking him to the vet for an exam when you are able to. He/she can listen to Bo's heart and lungs, and may also recommend lab work or chest x-rays to help diagnose the problem.

Dogs can get colds, however more serious issues such as infections, respiratory issues, allergies and even canine influenza can mimic cold symptoms in dogs as well. If Bentley's symptoms don't resolve after a day, his coughing continues or he seems in distress, he doesn't want to eat or drink, or he has a fever, seeking veterinary care ASAP to figure out the issue is best.

I am concerned that she is having such trouble breathing. This could be another pneumonia, an upper respiratory infection, a fungal infection, a congenital heart problem and much more. If your vet has already done X-rays and they were normal, you may want to talk to them about having an ultrasound of the heart done. Also, I would have her blood work checked to see how her liver and kidney values are and see what her white blood count looks like. Hazel could be coughing after drinking the water if it is cold and shocking her a little when she drinks, you could try giving her water at room temp. However, it could be a sign that there is a source of irritation in her throat. For example if she had a problem with the opening to her trachea some water could be going the wrong way causing her to cough. I would expect her to show other signs though if this was the case. If it gets worse or persists at could warrant an investigation at the vets. Most dogs will have a rest after a walk. As long as she has plenty of energy when out I wouldn't worry too much. Spayed dogs can still get an infection in the vagina so if she persistently licks or you can see a wound or discharge I would visit the vet.
