My dog acts normal, won't eat her food, but eats human food. Why?

Hi my dog , Camila has not eaten for about two days and I am worried about her. She is acting normal and is playful but she just won’t eat. I have been giving her bits and pieces of human food and she will eat that. What should I do?

I am sorry to hear that Camila is not eating and I can see why you are concerned as am I. It is great that she is acting normal and playful but as most dogs are very food motivated a decreased appetite is their way of telling us they don't feel like themselves. Decreased appetite is unfortunately a very common symptom for many different problems, some more serious then others. It can be from something going on with the GI tract itself or any other body system (other organs). Is there anything she could have eaten that she was not supposed to (got in to the trash, chewed up toys)? What I would recommend is that Camila have a visit to a veterinarian for an examination. More than likely they will also want to check some lab work to look at her organ function and potentially take some x-rays. Based on these results they may prescribe some medication or may recommend additional testing to investigate her decreased appetite further. He may be showing signs of dietary indiscretion which can happen from eating something that does not sit well in the stomach. Clinical symptoms that can occur include not eating, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. Sometimes this resolves on its own. However, sometimes this does require some form of therapy which is mostly supportive in nature. If she develops any vomiting, diarrhea or inappetence, have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and best wishes!

Why isn't my dog eating her food but still playing and active?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If this is a new thing that Lucy doesn't want to eat then I would have her looked at by your Vet. I am glad she still is active and wants to play. You can try sitting with her and not engaging in play until after she eats. You can try adding warm water to her dry food to make it more appealing or even add a tablespoon of wet food with water and mix it together. Medical conditions like: viral gastroenteritis but I would expect vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy; foreign body but again would expect vomiting and lethargy, irritable bowel, Addison's disease, intestinal parasites. My guess is that it is behavioral or underlying intestinal allergies (inflammatory bowel disease). My dog won't eat after my trip, but acts normal. What should I do?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dog. As long as she is otherwise acting normal, it should be fine to monitor her for another 24-48 hours. If her appetite does not improve or she displays other signs of illness, then she will need to see her veterinarian. Hopefully she was just stressed by your absence, but you will need to ensure there is not an underlying medical condition. I hope this information helps!

My dog won't eat her food. Why does she only eat from my hand?

Not wanting to eat can be a sign of nearly any sort of illness, ranging from a simple upset stomach to much more serious conditions involving multiple organ systems. It's encouraging that she will eat out of your hands, but if this is not usually how she eats than I would say that she should be assessed by a veterinarian. A thorough physical exam might help reveal a problem if one is present. As far as things you can do at home to assess the situation, you can obtain a rectal temperature (above 102.5 or below 99.0 is considered abnormal), check the gum lines for paleness / dryness, and check the skin for hydration. My dog is sick, won't eat, and vet tests are normal. What should I do?

That duration of inappetance is very concerning. Did you family vet prescribe some therapy, anti nausea medication? It sounds like your kid needs to see a specialist. For a case like this an internal medicine specialist would be the best person to see. A full abdominal ultrasound with an experienced ultrasonographer (either a radiologist or internist) is likely the first step if blood work and xrays are normal. Unfortunately some pets cases are complex and some disease processes require more advanced testing then what family vets can provide. Likely your family vet has ruled out some common things but an internist will look for the uncommon things. Unfortunately decreased appetite is a very non specific symptom because in animals when they do not feel good for any reason they can stop eating. Why won't my dog eat her food unless I add human food to it?

Thanks for using the Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. There could be several reasons for this. One explanation could be that Ida has YOU well-trained! She knows that if she just waits long enough, you will give her something yummy from your plate. Another explanation is that she is a “social” eater. Some dogs do not seem to want to eat anything until their human sits down to eat as well. Your giving a bite of your food may be her signal that it’s time to eat. Finally, if you haven’t had her in for a yearly exam with some routine bloodwork, I strongly encourage you to do so. Dental disease and early liver or kidney disease can all affect appetite and eating patterns so be sure to get those ruled out. Best wishes to you and Ida!
