Why does my dog have red spots on his belly? Is it an emergency?

Hi and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to see that Finn is having this problem. I see lesions or spots like this occasionally on dogs in the same areas. Most of the time these spots resolve without treatment but most of the cases I have seen are much more mild with fewer spots. I always wonder whether these are related to some kind of insect sting/spider bites, contact irritation from something in the environment, etc. Some of these lesions or spots can resemble small areas of hemorrhage too which could indicate blood clotting disorders and those causes can be numerous. I would advise your veterinarian evaluate these since Finn has a lot of them. I think that if he is acting completely normal you could monitor this and see if they resolve. So if he acts normal, eats, drinks, uses the bathroom normally you could just see if they resolve. If anything is different, he should be evaluated immediately. I think it looks like Jersey might have a bacterial skin infection, or potentially insect bites on her belly. If Jersey seems painful or extremely itchy or has other symptoms you may want to see an emergency vet, but otherwise I think it is okay to wait until your vet opens to have these skin lesions examined.

These are likely fly or insect bites. They should fade in the next day or two. If he begins to itch, contact your veterinarian for a dose of Benadryl (diphenhydramine). Place an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent licking. These bites are common in the Spring.

From the appearance in those photos, I suspect those are black fly bites. They can cause pretty dramatic round red lesions that are flat (not raised). While they look impressive, Gnocchi shouldn't be bothered by them. They will gradually go away (it can take a week or two) and are not dangerous. I hope this helps!

Start by bathing him with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner such as an oatmeal or fatty acid based formula. If the skin lesions spread, do not resolve or seem to bother him, then he will need to see his veterinarian. Oh no. Poor Sawyer. Yes this is considered to potentially be an emergency situation. These red blotchy areas are called petechiae and this could indicate a spontaneous bleeding disorder or platelet malfunction. I would recommend taking Sawyer in to an ER vet to have blood testing done and appropriate treatment depending on blood analysis findings. Hopefully this is just a platelet abnormality and can be treated with steroids and antibiotics. However, these can turn into malignant cancerous tumors if not addressed early enough. I recommend having these removed before they turn into cancerous tumors. These superficial skin tumors are typically removed using electrocautery. Removal is typically simple and requires no major aftercare for healing. I hope this helps!
