My Chihuahua has red spots on belly. Is it bugs or skin infection?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed | 3 lbs

I am scared that the spots in the photo may be some type of bug or bug larvae burrowed into my Chihuahuas under belly. The red spots are from me picking at the spots. I did remove something but it was too small for me to see. Please help.

This presentation is likely to be due to a mild superficial bacterial infection (bacterial folliculitis) on the ventral abdomen.
Nothing to be extremely worried about as it could be self limiting/resolving.
Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching (if any).
If signs are not resolving, a check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) will be then needed to solve the problem.
