Why are there red spots on my dog's bed? Is she in heat or bleeding?

I'd have Iszadora seen by a vet immediately. This "spotting" could be due to a pyometra, which is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment. Please take her into a vet now. If she does have a pyometra, she will need to be spayed. Best of luck.

If a dog is spayed correctly they not long have heat cycles and should not be spotting or bleeding. If there is a discharge noted, it is best to start with a urine sample and an ultrasound to look at the bladder and kidneys and look at the cervix to see if there is an infection or a growth.

Hello Mariah! If you are finding red spots, Mia is likely in heat. The heavy bleeding doesn’t happen at the beginning of the heat. The swollen nopples indicate she is in heat as well. Her behavior does sound normal for a dog in heat :-)

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If there are no other signs of heat (swollen vulva, swollen teats), then I am concerned for a urinary tract infection. Take Molly and a sample of her urine in to the vet. If there ARE signs that she is in heat, talk to your vet about testing for an ovarian remnant (a few ovary cells left in the body can be enough to trigger a heat sometimes). It's possible that these could be blood spots, but you are also correct that it could be due to her constantly licking her bed. It would be a good idea to have Bella checked out by a vet to be safe. She could have a UTI and is dripping some blood and urine leading to these spots, or it may have been a small wound. It never hurts to have a health check with the vet when you find something out of the ordinary. I hope this helps!

Bleeding from the vulva is normal in intact female dogs during their heat cycle. But if Riley isn't currently in heat, or if the amount of blood you're seeing is more than normal for her, then I would be concerned that something else may be going on. Bleeding from this area can be caused by bladder stones, infections, a bleeding disorder of some kind, or even a vaginal tumor. It would be best to have Riley examined by a vet as soon as possible to determine what is causing the bleeding and get her started on appropriate treatment.

If you have had her for a long time and she has never had this issue then she probably is spayed and the problem is caused by something else. Lulu could have a urinary tract infection, bladder stones, or a tumor causing her to spot blood. The only way to know would be to have her examined by a vet. A vet can run a urinalysis to look for an infection and take an x-ray, if needed, to help diagnose. You could try to find a low cost clinic in your area and see if they could help. She may just need an oral antibiotic to treat an infection so it might not be too costly. Hope she gets better soon!
