My dogs have red skin and tongue after boarding. Is it allergies?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The skin lesions on the scrotum and nose could be related to allergies, but not the tongue. The tongue looks very sore and it does resemble chemical burn. Please, take Diesel to your vets, as this must be very painful for hm. He also may have burn to the esophagus and the stomach if he swallowed the corrosive substance.

His tongue does not appear to be critically discolored or alarming. It is actually quite pink still. If it seems darker to you, you could always take him in to have his blood checked to make sure he does not have any red blood cell abnormalities or clotting disorders. Otherwise, it is too difficult for me to give you an exact diagnosis without examining him. I would have a vet examine it just to be on the safe side if it is still there and you are concerned about it. A hands on exam will give you so much more information than a picture.

She is cute. She could have some allergies, especially if she is licking or chewing on her body, causing the redness and you could talk to your vet about trying an antihistamine to see if that helps. If it doesn't seem to be bothering her, you could also just monitor for a bit and see how it changes.

It is a little unusual to see gum bleeding secondary to allergies in a dog. Gingivitis most often occurs from infection beneath the gumline and a dental cleaning is probably needed, although bleeding gums can occasionally also be a sign of a clotting disorder. The red, inflamed paws sounds more like a seasonal allergy to me, and there is thought that dogs may absorb allergens through their paws when they're outside. If the steroids are finished, you may need to recheck with your vet to discuss a more long term plan for the allergy. Sometimes there is a secondary infection present that needs to be treated, and sometimes a long term allergy medication like Apoquel or Cytopoint or even allergy testing is recommended.

I would recommend taking Blue to a veterinarian. It looks like scars from the picture but if her skin is turning red then the redness can be allergies. It looks almost like she has hives but the picture is not too great in showing that. I would recommend a veterinarian immediately if she has bumps (hives). It could be allergies, and although allergies occur more frequently when dogs are a little older, some younger dogs can be affected too. Since the lesions are itchy parasites (such as demodex, etc.) and infection ( bacterial, fungal) need to ruled out as well. Since your guy is uncomfortable the best plan is to see you vet to test for the above so that the correct treatment is prescribed. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are medications such as Apoquel or prednisone which may help with the itch. 

 There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. 

Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). 

If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests.

 Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!
