My puppy is licking a lot; he has red, oozy spots near his penis. What is it?

Hi there and thank you for your post! From the pictures you posted, it looks like Chico may have a hot spot (moist dermatitis) area in front of his prepuce / penis. Some of the area appears to be yellow and this might indicate it is infected. I would get your vet to check this out so that Chico can receive the appropriate treatment. Most likely he will need an oral antibiotic and some topical ointments to treat the area. If he is constantly licking the area, I would get a plastic cone to keep around his head to prevent him from licking the area and making it worse. I hope this helps! It looks like he has a mild dermatitis/impetigo. You could try over the counter Vetericyn Spray and see if it resolves. Otherwise, he should be examined by a vet for treatment. He may need an oral antibiotic to treat.

The main concern is if it is an infection being that close to the opening, it has potential to travel up the urethra and cause a bladder infection. You can try to clean the area with soap and water and apply cortisone alternate with Neosporin to soothe the area, just discourage licking while it is one. This will help coat the area to minimize the contamination. If it does not improve or it continues to bother him, then I would get it checked out.

Hello, this looks like a very mild staph infection, very common in very young puppies. You can bathe your puppy with a mild antibacterial soap or shampoo, one with benzoyl peroxide or chlorhexidine. Allow the soap to remain in contact with the skin for 5-10 minutes before rinsing. Repeat this 1-2x a week & the skin should look better soon. You can try to use a medicated shampoo containing chlorhexidine based shampoo and bathe him twice weekly for about 1 week. If he does not get better, have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Alternatively, this could be secondary to allergies. Hopefully it is just an uncomplicated superficial infection. Good luck!

I'm not 100% sure what this spot is from just by looking at a photo. It could be just an injury but it could also be ringworm or skin mites (mange) or the start of a hot spot. I suggest you try this hot spot spray gel, 3-4 times per day. This could be due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. + I would recommend the following: + Flea treatment should be prescribed by a veterinarian. It is often combined with lungworm/intestinal worm treatment. Ensure all pets in the house are up to date and treated as per the frequency recommended + If your parasite treatment has lapsed, or you have an infestation, treat the house with an insecticide spray such as RIP flea/Acclaim/Indorex/Frontline house spray. These sprays are toxic to cats and reptiles/fish/birds so please follow the instructions on the bottles carefully + If the itching continues despite the above it would be recommended to start on a hydrolysed food trial with Purina HA, Hills z/d, or Royal Canin Anallergenic for 6-8weeks. This must be fed strictly and exclusively to see if it works, which means absolutely no treats or human foods otherwise the results are inconclusive + If all of this makes no difference then you will need to discuss investigations into environmental allergies with your vet, or be referred to a dermatologist + If a food allergy is ruled out then consider a skin diet (Royal Canin skin/Hills Derm Defence) or a skin supplement such as Yuderm, to help boost the skin barrier and prevent/reduce flare ups in the future.
