Why are my dog's eyes red and her elbows have dry skin spots?

I am sorry to hear of your concerns for Athena. You could be dealing with any number of issues for her unfortunately, ranging from a skin infection (bacterial or fungal) to a condition known as demodectic mange. Without being able to perform and exam and some testing it is difficult to say what you are dealing with for her. I would recommend continuing with the Advantix each month, was her bedding and clean her kennel regularly, and consider trying an oatmeal based shampoo if there seems to be any itching associated with the hairless patches. Have you looked into a vet that makes house visits? This may be a good option for you if Athena is too strong for you to handle in a regular clinic situation. A house call vet would be able to come and do an exam, perform some testing on Athena's skin, and hopefully give you a better idea of what is going on.

In the meantime, you can try bathing her with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner such as an oatmeal or fatty acid based formula to soothe the skin. This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria or fungal). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics or antifungal meds (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection can eventually be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking (if any). Poor Athena! It sounds like she may have an eye infection, or she could have allergies or suffered trauma to her eyes. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with it is considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I would have Athena seen by a vet today to have her eye examined and diagnosed. Once a diagnosis is reached, the vet can prescribe treatment for her eyes.

The dry areas on Ivy's back could be from a skin infection, or it could be due to allergies. The discharge fro her eye could be due to an eye infection. Any eye infection has to be checked out by a vet promptly as leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Please take her into a vet today.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is possibly allergies. The alopecic lesions are calluses which occur due to pressure on the bone ends. This can improve by adding more padding where she normally rests on. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing her allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!
