My dog has red bumps around her mouth. When should I worry?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Lucy. She may have a mild skin infection around her muzzle. If she has had any new treats or dog food she may be reacting to the diet change. This will be more common if she is experiencing irritated skin around her anus as well or if she has had any vomiting or diarrhea. If not, check her eyelid margins, ears and footpads for any lesions. These are commonly affected areas for autoimmune skin disease. If her skin does not heal or spreads, she will need to see her veterinarian. In the meantime, keep her muzzle clean and dry. Poor guy! Your can try this: It won’t hurt him if he licks it off. However, if it’s not improving in 5 days or so, I would recommend that you schedule a recheck with your vet. I’m worried he may need antibiotics, as he may have a deep skin infection. If it continues to be a problem , a skin biopsy may be recommended. Thanks for asking PetCoach!

I would guess Lola could have a bacterial infection around her mouth. Trauma could also cause similar lesions. If she seems itchy it is possible that she has an infection secondary to allergies. A bacterial skin infection is often treated with oral antibiotics so I would recommend making an appointment to have your vet take a look.

This can be caused by an infection, which may have resulted from a small cut. While Kona is pretty young, it is possible that the bump is a small tumor, and it can be removed to determine if it is benign (not harmful) or malignant (likely to spread). It is concerning that the bump has gotten bigger over time, so I recommend having her seen by a vet. You can get her an E-collar or "cone" to prevent her from scratching or rubbing the area. Poor Brooklynn! I would worry that she is having an allergic reaction to something. Sometimes we are able to figure out what a dog has had an allergic reaction to and sometimes we can't. Either way, we need to resolve the allergic reaction. The only over the counter product that can be used at home is Benadryl (https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/dog/benadryl/). However, your vet can give a Benadryl injection that will work more quickly and may also give a steroid injection if needed, so I would recommend having your vet evaluate her and decide on the best treatment for her. If the bumps are getting worse, Brooklynn is not eating or she vomits, she needs medical attention. If she appears to have trouble swallowing or breathing, it is a medical emergency and she needs to be seen by a veterinarian right away. Good luck! There is no way of knowing for sure without an examination though this represents a reason to seek veterinary care. This is usually determined with an examination and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) or a biopsy. Treatment depends on the findings up to that point.
