My dog's eye was red and bulging, now sunken. Should I worry?

I recommend having your pet's eyes examine ASAP. Your dog may have a condition called enophthalmos or sunken eye. This occurs when a retractor muscle spasms and pulls the eyeball back into its socket. When only one eye is affected, the most likely cause is a painful eye, often due to eyelid irritation, corneal abrasion or ulceration, or foreign material in the eye. Following a severe eye injury , the eye can also shrink and sink into its socket. Treatment is based on diagnosing the underlying cause of the sunken eye.

Poor Red. I hate to hear this is happening. The tumor will not likely pop the eye out but it will make the eye more prone to popping out if there is any type of trauma. Pressure on the eye can be very uncomfortable so monitor him very closely and keep the veterinarian updated to any changes or progression. If he lost his vision in that eye, which he most probably did, i agree that it would be best to have a surgery done to have the eye removed as it will always be prone to complications and infections if it is left there.

This is an emergency. If the eye ball is deviating to the side suddenly then there may be a serious neurological problem or your dog suffered a trauma that may have damaged the eye or the muscles that are keeping the eye ball in the right place. Please take your dog to a veterinarian right now, as this could compromise her eye sight and also may be very painfull.\\.

I am afraid that this red mass looks like a tumor or multicystic mass. This is definitely something that needs to be seen by a vet as it a) keeps your dog from closing his eye lid which can damage the eye to the point of losing vision (will dry out the cornea), and b), tumors can grow invasively, ie destroy the eye. Your vet will examine the mass, possibly take a little bit of tissue to examine under the microscope or send in to a pathology lab and then, depending on the findings, discuss treatment options, which could include removal of the mass alone (if possible), medication to remove it or make it shrink, or even removal of the eye. Hello. When an eye is removed, all of the supporting structures should be removed as well, including any and all tear-producing glands. If there is some sort of fluid accumulating, perhaps there was some glandular tissue left behind or some type of infection. It is also important to make sure there is no issue with an abscessed upper tooth. I would recommend a check up by your vet - it looks like the third eyelid is inflamed (common with viral infections) and may be developing a cherry eye. In the meantime, bathing with sterile saline eye wash may help keep the eye fresh and clean and reduce any discomfort
