Why does my dog have recurring red skin circles and hair loss?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 2 years and 11 months old | 98 lbs

I have a 3yr neutered male blue nose pit named Chance. About 4 months ago started with red circles on stomach. Took a course of antibiotics x10 days and Claritin x14 days which seemed to help but then the symptoms came back. Now has patches/circular areas of missing hair.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Chance. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian for skin testing. Skin scrapes are used to look for a mite known as demodex. This is common in his breed. A fungal culture is used to diagnose ringworm. If these tests are negative, then an allergy is more likely. Environmental allergies are common in the summer. In the meantime, you can try bathing him with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner such as an oatmeal or fatty acid based formula to help soothe the skin. I hope this information helps!
