Why do my dogs get recurring hives and lumps all over their body?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

I have two pitbulls who keep having these reactions where they break out in lumps or hives all over their body. It has happened three times in 4 months!!! We have taken them to the vet each time and they just do blood work and give us pills. They claim it's a thyroid problem or maybe that's in addition to but I'm losing all my money in vet bills and no solution or even a determination as to what the problem is

Hello. Hives and limbs present are a sign of systemic histamine release (allergic reaction). This usually occurs due a either bug bites, or sometimes due to mast cell tumors (however with it occurring in both your dogs as the same time this is MUCH less likely). I would check your yard for ant-hills, spider nests, bee hives, etc. Sometimes some plants can cause this as well. I would ask about thyroid testing if they think it is the thyroid, you can test for thyroid disease. Good luck with your pups.
