My dog ran away, now sad and vomiting. Is she sick or just homesick?

Severe, persistent vomiting should be assessed by a vet (especially if vomiting water for more than 12-18hours due to a risk of dehydration). It is possible he may have swallowed something while he was roaming which may have caused an obstruction or irritation. Given it happened within hours of coming home it is unlikely to be anything he contracted in the shelter

If he's never been away from you, it may be that he is having some anxiety with you being gone that may be contributing. However, it could be something more serious. Since he's acting lethargic and is not eating, talk to your mum ( I assume this is who is caring for him currently?) and see if she can get him in to see a vet in the next few days. Unless she was outdoors her exhaustion is not very likely. It could be a mild case of gastritis (upset tummy) or even a mild toxin exposure. Sometimes giving small amounts of water frequently and seeing if the pet holds that down and, if so, then slow re-introduction of food is all that is needed. If they vomit the water it is more serious and a veterinarian should examine the pet. If, however, your dog continues to vomit, has bloody diarrhea, seems painful or has a distended appearance to her stomach she should be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible.

I would be concerned that it could cause Skye some GI upset such as vomiting. If it does, I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear that but this could just be exhaustion and normal tiredness. They may have been exhibiting breeding behavior if they are male and female dogs resulting in exhaustion or just very tired from roaming while away from your home. I wouldn't encourage any playing. Let them rest up. As long as your dog is eating, drinking and going to the bathroom normally then I wouldn't be too concerned but if any seems different, the best bet is to have your veterinarian evaluate them. They can perform a physical exam, take their temperature, and advise any tests (fecal, blood, xrays, ultrasound, etc) which would help them with a diagnosis. Or they may just prescribe some medication if that is indicated. Good luck with your dog and I hope things return to normal soon.

Poor Merida! The vomit looks more like regurgitation, or indigested food. Her nose scratch may be from digging to get out of her crate. All of her symptoms may be caused by separation anxiety, especially because she is behaving differently or if this is the first time you have left her. However, this can be coincidental with parasites, an infection, or ingestion of a toxin or foreign body. I recommend keeping a close eye on her and having her seen by a vet if she develops bloody diarrhea, continues vomiting, or starts acting lethargic. You can hold off food for the rest of the day and give small amounts of water. I hope this helps!

In the pictures, she does look quite skinny. I'm concerned she is sick or she could have been injured while she was missing causing the vomiting. The best thing to do for her is take into a vet immediately to get the cause of the vomiting diagnosed so she can be treated. I hope this helps!
