How long should I wait between my dog's rabies and distemper shots?

You can do either. Many pets are given all those vaccines at once and they do fine but you are correct that this does increase the likelihood of a vaccine reaction. If you want to be cautious, then separating the vaccines by a week is a good idea. It's never hurts to be cautious. I hope this helps.

Most vaccines can be given in a series on the same day as long as they are given in different injection sites, and your dog doesn't have a history of adverse reactions to vaccines. However, your vet will know your pet best and it's best to contact them with regards to any vaccine protocols they use, as they will have the most up to date information on the vaccine type and manufacturer they are using in their clinic that may counter indicate giving it on the same day. The only other thing I could think would be a potential liability issue if the injection is given the same time as a home-given injection and then an adverse reaction occurred, as it would be hard to determine what injection caused the reaction if not properly documented. If you have documentation of the vaccines you've given at home, I would make sure these are all up to date with your veterinarian to ensure there isn't any miscommunication going on.

It would be fine to give both at the same time in my opinion but it would be at the discretion of your veterinarian. The timing of when to go depends on her last vaccine. I would recommend you call ahead of time to check in with your veterinarian specifically as they need to decide if to proceed with the vaccines at the same time or not. Best of luck!

Great question! I'm assuming Marcelino was given his third round of DHPPi (distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza), and he will not need another booster of that vaccine until one year after the last one was given. As for this rabies vaccine, I would wait two weeks before getting that vaccine done. Good on you for getting his vaccines! I hope this helps.

I'm not sure why this would be - I can't think of any reason that you would be required to wait, and this is not our policy at my clinic. I would suggest asking your vet why he/she recommends waiting, as this isn't common practice in my experience.

For most normal healthy dogs in households with humans who are not immunocompromised and don't partake in doggies daycare, dog parks or groomers, 4-6 weeks is generally fine. If however your pet does not meet this profile, you need to discuss the situation with your veterinarian. Also, the Rabies vaccine should always be kept up to date and never late. I hope this helps.
