What's this purple bulge on my dog's leg? Tumor or just a wound?

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | 2 years and 8 months old | 74 lbs

There's a purple colorish bulge on my 2 year old GSD's left leg. Am afraid if it's a tumor or just a wound from playing.

I would recommend that you make an appointment for your veterinarian to examine Tyson and in particular this area that is worrying you. They will be able to determine if it is a mass and if further investigation is needed. This may include a fine needle aspirate of the mass (using a needle to obtain a sample of cells that can be looked at under the microscope), an incisional biopsy (where a small part of the mass is removed and examined by a pathologist) and an excisional biopsy (where the whole mass is removed and examined by a pathologist). It is always better to get lumps checked whilst they are still small to make removal easier and less invasive if that is deemed necessary.

My dog has a lumpy, growing mass on his leg. What could it be?

Without a physical exam or diagnostics, it is difficult to determine if this is something to worry over. Ideally, a fine needle aspirate or biopsy should be done to collect samples for pathology. This may provide a diagnosis. X-rays of the limb may be recommended to rule out bony involvement. Since you state it is growing, it should be removed before it becomes too large. As it is, that is a difficult area to close after a mass removal.

My dog has a soft lump on his neck. Is it a fatty cyst or worse?

It is unlikely that the lump would have developed from Tyson scratching at his ear. The lump could be a swollen lymph node due to the underlying ear infection. It could also be a benign fatty mass called a lipoma. Another alternative is that it could be a cancerous mass. If you are concerned about the mass, your vet will be able to test it with a fine needle aspiratebto determine what it is and recommend appropriate treatment. Good luck! This could be a seroma from an injury, a cyst, abscess or a tumor. Cysts and abscesses need to be drained by a vet. If your vet suspects a tumor, he will do a fine needle aspirate to determine whether it is a harmless lipoma, which does not need to be removed unless it is ulcerating or bothers the dog due to its location or size, or another tumor that needs to be removed. Please make an appointment with your veterinarian for an exam of the mass.

This looks like a severe bite wound and it would need to be examined by a veterinarian. This wound needs to be cleaned and disinfected and your dog will need pain medicine and antibiotics, Please take Tyson to a veterinarian for wound care. The swelling may be a sign of a fracture or infection.

My dog has a lump on his leg. Is it serious? When should I see a vet?

That is a large, lobulated lump (no just one defined lump) in a location that would generally never have something like a swollen lymph nodes. I recommend making an appointment with your vet for a fine needle aspirate (where they aspirate cells from the mass and put them on a slide to be sent out for review) to determine if it is an abscess or a tumor/cancer of some sort. My dog has a purple lump. Could it be a recurring tumor or cancer?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. From the picture, I would suspect this to be one of two things as first suspicion. A hemangioma (benign cutaneous mass) or a hemangiosarcoma (malignant mass). Most of the time, the hemangioma will turn into a hemangiosarcoma if not removed. I would have this looked at because the sooner you remove this the better. This could also be a different type of mass but this is my suspicion.
