My 4-month-old pug puppy can't walk. Why are her back legs weak?

This is most suggestive of lower spine injury. This is not uncommon in older dogs, where the vertebral canal, or intervertebral disks can pinch the nerve. Treatment is possible depending on the cause of this, so I recommend taking Bandit to the vet for an evaluation. They should be able to identify the cause of this and at-least get him started on medication to relieve pain and hopefully the mobility and incontinence issues. This sounds like a medical emergency and you should have Puddin seen right away. The potential cause for her signs are a slipped disc in her back causing pinching of her nerves going to her back legs (Intervertebral disc disease), trauma, spinal infection, a spinal tumor or a toxin. The veterinarian will want to perform a through exam and localize the pain. They will also check Puddin's neurologic function which will help to determine if her signs are due to a spinal problem. If it just started you can let her rest for a few days with minimal walking and minimal physical exercise, if it does not improve within 3-4 days you will have to take her to the vet in order to get it checked and treated, she might need pain killers for a few days. if the vet think it's something more serious such as a fracture, joint injury or foreign body, he might recommend to have an xray done as well. It sounds like Cupcake could be having back pain or another problem with her spine. Intervertebral disc disease is fairly common in small breed dogs and can lead to weakness in the rear legs, although it is usually not episodic. It’s also possible that she is having an atypical seizure or some other kind of pain that is causing her weakness. I’d recommend having your vet examine her - it might help to video how she is walking and take it with you.

The pictures look like Potti has some muscle loss of the hind legs. If he cannot walk he really needs to see a vet as soon as possible. Infectious disease, trauma, parasites and neurologic disease can cause the inability to use your legs. The condition is worrisome though. He may be experiencing advancing joint disease that is leaving him to be very weak in the back legs. The collapsing and splaying is likely painful for him. He also could be experiencing a neurological condition from a bulging or ruptured disc in his back. This can be a very serious situation as the weakness has the potential to become paralysis.
