My 4-month old Maltese puppy has frequent reverse sneezes. Vet?

Hi, my 4month old Maltese has been making strange sounds with his nose, like a reverse sneeze but it is very frequent. Should I take him to a vet?

Yes, if you are noticing a sudden change in his behavior, I recommend to have him examined. He could be experiencing an infection or have something trapped in his nose. The vet can give him medications to soothe his mucus membranes and this may help him to feel better and to lessen the physical symptoms. Google “reverse sneezing in dogs” and make sure this isn’t what your seeing. If it is, good news! It’s almost always nothing to worry about and we do nothing about it. (If it’s coming with nasal or eye discharge, body itching, etc. see the vet to make sure its nothing more serious.)

It is not common but not alarming either. In puppies that age, I would worry about an allergic reaction or a respiratory infection if it persist or if there is change in appetite or activity. If you can record an episode and show it to your vet when they examine him, it may help.

While she could be experiencing allergies as they are common this time of year, a respiratory tract infection is also possible. Given how frequently her symptoms are occurring, I worry that she does have an infection. If so, she may need an antibiotic. In the meantime, you can place her the bathroom while you shower. Poor Charlie! Look up a YouTube video of a “reverse sneeze” to see if this is what he is doing. If so, this is nothing to worry about and you can Help him stop by rubbing him from head to tail. Sometimes Benadryl on a regular basis will help decrease the frequency. See link below. If this isn’t what he is doing then I would have your vet look at him. With him being so young, he could have a viral infection or an upper respiratory infection which needs to be treated. If left untreated he could get worse. My dog keeps reverse sneezing. When is it time to see the vet?

If he continues to do so it would be a good idea to get him checked. Reverse sneezing is usually meant to clear the nasal passages of irritants so if he can't clear what is bothering him it may mean he has something else going on that induces these sneezing episodes. Pay attention when he does it to see if there is something in common with each incident that may be causing or contributing to the reverse sneezing that you can pass along to your vet, even video it if you get the chance.

As long as there are no other signs (nasal or eye discharge, coughing, lethargy, decreased appetite, change in behavior, etc) then I would just monitor the situation. I know it's troubling to see her go through these episodes and if they continue or worsen, have your vet take a look at her. They may advise some antihistamines or other medications to lessen the frequency of these if they feel it will help. Good luck

Why is my 11-year-old dog reverse sneezing or having sinus problems?

Why does my puppy sneeze and reverse sneeze when we go outside?

If there is no nasal discharge or other signs of illness associated with the sneezing I wouldn't be concerned. My Bichon has sudden breathing issues. Is it a reverse sneeze?

I am sorry to hear about Max. What you are describing sounds like it could be a reverse sneeze. I would recommend videotaping these episodes and showing them to your vet. If it is happening several times a day, your vet may consider doing a trial of antihistamine or treating prophylactically for nasal mites. I would let them know how frequently it is happening.
