My 8-month Corgi puppy is losing weight despite eating. Is it serious?

Pet's info: Dog | Pembroke Welsh Corgi | Female | unspayed | 8 months and 6 days old

Ari is 8 month old Corgi who has started to lose weight & has became underweight despite eating 3-4 meals a day. She currently eats Blue buffalo dry puppy food. She did have an episode of vomiting about a week ago but we attributed to her getting into my dads dog's food while visiting. She still plays & acts like her normal loving self.

I agree with you. She is very underweight. This is very abnormal. I strongly recommend you get her to a vet for an exam. Hopefully this problem is due to something easy like worms but I am very worried it is more serious like an underlying congenital problem with her liver and/or kidneys. Please, get her to a vet. This is not a simple instance of her just needing to eat more or eat supplements.

Hello,
I would be concerned that she continues to lose weight despite a healthy appetite. Weight loss may be a symptoms of underlying gastrointestinal or liver disease. I would advise you to have her evaluated by her veterinarian and discuss diagnostic tests including bloodwork and abdominal ultrasound. As far as the diet, try the website balanceit.com to ensure you are providing all the micronutrients needed.

I recommend to have Samson examined by the veterinarian. Not feeding enough calories per day can be a cause as well as intestinal parasites, organ disease, endocrine disorders among other causes can all cause weight loss. The vet may recommend running a fecal test to check for parasites and may also recommend blood work to check for signs of a problem. Even on a low-fat diet, excessive weight loss is not expected or normal. I recommend to have Dove checked for other potential problems such as kidney disease, cancer or progression of her liver condition. If no medical causes found, the doctor may need to change her diet or provide some sort of high calorie supplement to control her weight loss. You will first need to rule out other medical conditions. Best of luck.

If she is underweight she may have an underlying medical condition. I suggest you have her examined by a vet. That is big weight discrepancy. My active dog is losing weight, ribs showing. When should I see a vet?

Losing weight could be a sign of many things and it could range from a poor quality dog food, to parasites to something unexpected in a young dog like kidney disease. I do recommend to be safe and have her examined by your veterinarian and have some basic lab work and a stool sample checked for worms. Pay close attention to her bowels for any loose stool, blood or any vomiting which could indicate something like IBD or pancreatic insufficiency. It would be very unusual for a dog that young to have developed kidney disease, and if it was severe kidney disease, I would not expect him to be active and eating well. He may be drinking and urinating more due to the change in temperature outside. I recommend ensuring you are feeding him adequate calories based on the feeding chart on Pixel's food, and continuing to monitor his weight. Eventually he will plateau at a certain weight, and may fluctuate up and down from that weight. As long as he is acting normally and eating well, and not experiencing any vomiting or diarrhea I would not be concerned! I hope this is helpful!

My dog is skinny after puppies, eating constantly. Is she okay?

I recommend getting her seen by your vet for an exam and bloodwork. She could have parasites, also, voracious appetite without weight gain or weight loss is a sign of diabetes. It could be that the pups have worn her out. She should have been eating puppy food the whole time she was pregnant and nursing. If she was not, this could be partly responsible for her thin condition. Your vet will give you a treatment plan, based on the findings.

My puppy is hungry, not gaining weight, and seems hypoglycemic. Why?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I have several thoughts for you regarding Cooper. 1) He's simply hungry. Puppies, just like human children, do not all eat the same and do go through growth spurts. If he is underweight (per a veterinarian), increase the total amount by ~25%. If he is an appropriate weight, but seems to have "stalled out" in the growth department, give it time - again, sometimes weight gain comes in spurts. Your vet can actually calculate a daily calorie goal for Cooper based on his current weight and body condition score if you'd like a more specific recommendation. 2) He has an underlying problem. Liver shunt, heart defect, pancreas problem, or other issues can cause a "failure to thrive" or "runty" puppy. If he truly isn't gaining weight or is underweight despite a good appetite and plenty of food, it's time to talk to your vet about bloodwork and other testing to figure out if there is a problem. 3) He has worms. Worms do not shed eggs 24/7 and it is technically possible to have a "negative" fecal float and still have worms. If he had enough worms to cause problems gaining weight, it is doubtful the float would be negative but still, talk to your vet about a dewormer - just in case. It is much cheaper and easier than all the other testing so you'd hate to miss such a simple fix. Hope this helps and best of luck to you and Cooper!

Why is my older dog losing weight even though he eats and is active?

According to the symptom of weight loss, otherwise normal and elevations on bloodwork, I would advise having your pet checked for Cushings disease (due to elevated ALP) via a specific test that your vet can go over with you. Also an abdominal ultrasound should be considered as well to check for any obvious masses since the Globulins were a bit high. Weight loss can also be caused by a change in diet as well, especially if your pet was once overweight, so its best to discuss this possibility with your vet as well. Also it is worth mentioning that none of the medications you listed would cause weight loss as an adverse effect. I do hope that things work out well for your pet moving forward.
