My active dog is losing weight, ribs showing. When should I see a vet?

You should be able to feel her ribs while standing without pushing hard and she should have an hour glass waist from the sides and top of her body. She should also have good muscle definition in her chest and limbs. Make sure you are feeding what the bag of food says for her daily amount based on her weight. Be sure that Enzo is on a high quality dog food, he may require a food for performance dogs or active dogs. Some dogs just have higher metabolism. I would also recommend having him checked and assessed for parasites as Paris citizen can certainly cause a dog to lose weight or prevent them from gaining enough weight. You may want to discuss running other bloodwork or diagnostic testing with Enzo’s veterinarian. Or see if they have any recommendations for diet changes that may help him put weight on. I would agree that Thor is much thinner than he should be. There are many different reasons for weight loss and muscle wasting, including hormonal conditions, parasitic conditions, certain infectious / inflammatory conditions, simply not eating enough over a long period, and of course, certain cancers. My advise to you would be to have Thor examined by your regular veterinarian via physical exam. They will determine if there is a need for further diagnostic laboratory work or imaging. It is often very difficult to make a diagnosis via physical exam unless there is some obvious and palpable inside of or on the outside of the animal. Supportive information via lab work and imaging is very often needed. Hope this makes sense.

If her ribs are really sticking out and there is no fat or muscle, then see your vet. There could be a medical cause for her condition. If your vet clears her, increase the amount of food offered until she is at an appropriate weight. Ask your vet how to perform a Body Condition Score (BCS) on your dog using the 9 point scale. Ideally, she should have a waist when looked at from above. Her ribs should be seen and easily felt under a layer of fat/muscle. From the side, her chest should tuck up into her abdomen.

Hi. I'm not sure how old she is, but yes, I recommend getting her seen for basic exam and lab work. She could still have worms even if you don't see them with the naked eye. So a fecal test to the lab would be the first step. Basic lab work to make sure liver and kidneys and electrolytes are all normal will need to be to be checkee as well. A common condition in German shepherds is exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. This is a condition in which the body isn't able to digest or absorb nutrients properly. The pets eat well and act hungry, but don't gain weight. There is a test for this condition as well. Your veterinarian will help guide the diagnostics once the exam and symptoms are reviewed. This could be due to several things like age and losing some muscle mass, he may need an increase nutritional requirements, liver or kidney problems, cancer or something else. You could get a baseline weight and increase the amount of food you are feeding as long as there is no other symptoms to see if he puts on some weight. I would reweigh him in 2-4 weeks. If he is still loosing weight or not gaining any weight or if you start seeing additional symptoms, I would have your vet take a look at him. Your vet will be able to do a fecal, blood work and even x-rays if needed to help determine the cause of weight loss. I hope this helps and he starts to gain weight quickly.

First, he should see his veterinarian for blood and urine testing to ensure there is no underlying disease that is affecting him. If he is deemed healthy, then you can consider another brand of food. Some dogs will respond better to one brand over another. I would stay within the performance line of foods though with the 30:20 ratio you are using. You can feed more than the bag recommends if necessary and supplement with canned food. Your goal is to be able to easily feel all of his ribs and see the last few for him to be at a healthy weight. He needs a defined waist from the top and side views as well. Lastly, neutering him will slow his metabolism and result in weight gain. I hope this information helps!
