My 5-month Bernese puppy is limping. Should I ask about glucosamine?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bernese Mountain Dog | Female | spayed | 5 months and 12 days old | 31 lbs

I have a Bernese Mountain Dog. She is 5 months old. I noticed today that she is limping after playing vigorously with the dog next door. I am taking her to the Vet on Monday. She doesn't seem to be in pain, but I have been reading about arthritis in this breed. I'm going to ask for Xrays, of course, from what I've read online-should I ask about glucosamine or other medication for my puppy?

Until you get a full diagnosis it would be inappropriate to speculate. It would be recommended in all giant breeds to feed a high quality large/giant breed puppy food which should already be enriched with glucosamine etc, to prevent excess weight gain or rapid growth and to limit strenuous exercise until bones are fully developed. Keep her on complete rest with only short, toilet walks until this can be fully investigated
