My dog is puking, drooling, and lethargic. What should I do?

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Male | unneutered | 8 months and 20 days old | 110 lbs

My dog is puking and drooling excessively. He did eat his food and drank water after he puked and went to the bathroom normally. He’s also lethargic and less active than normal

Poor Gatsby! He could have a GI illness, may have eaten something rotten, could have a foreign body, or may have pancreatitis. I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Poor Bobby! No, this isn't normal, and he could be suffering from a severe GI illness, may have eaten something rotten or toxic, could have a foreign body, or could have pancreatitis. This excessive saliva and drooling can be caused by nausea, which he would be feeling from vomiting so much. If he has stopped vomiting, I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.

I'm sorry to hear that Django hasn't been feeling well! Sudden diet changes can cause acute episodes of gastroenteritis (inflammation in the GI tract), which can lead to vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea. You can try continuing to withhold food for the rest of the day today, then offer small frequent amounts of a bland diet starting tomorrow morning. Feed boiled white meat chicken and white rice (1 cup for every 10 pounds of body weight) for several days if his vomiting and nausea subside. After a few days, gradually mix his normal food in with the bland diet over another 5-7 day period. All of that said, if Django remains lethargic, refuses to drink any water, or experiences profuse vomiting, he should be examined by a vet because he may need fluids or other medications. I hope that he feels better soon!

My dog is vomiting, inactive, sleepy, and drooling. What should I do?

If your dog is lethargic and vomiting these two things in combination are reason to seek veterinary care, as your dog is likely dehydrated and may need fluid therapy via an IV catheter or subcutaneous fluids. If he has just started vomiting or has only vomited a couple times, you can try fasting him (nothing orally, no food or water) to let his stomach settle and then slowly reintroducing fluids and then a bland diet such as plain cooked white rice and boiled chicken breast. If despite this he continues to vomit, he becomes weak, he has blood in his vomit or stool, or is painful in his abdomen then seek veterinary care.
