Why is my spayed dog pregnant? I thought spaying prevented pregnancy.

It is not possible for a spayed female dog to become pregnant, because the spay procedure involves complete removal of the ovaries and uterus. So if your dog became pregnant, then she was never spayed. I would recommend discussing the situation with the veterinarian who you believe did the procedure to see what may have happened in this case.

    Just like humans, dogs can go into premature labor for unknown reasons. Dogs onl have a 63-65 day pregnancy, so even 4 days early can be too early for survival.
    I am so sorry are experiencing this. As far as her being spayed, she can not be spayed if she got pregnant. When a dog is spayed both then ovaries and the uterus is removed. Making pregnancy impossible. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

    It is absolutely not possible for Tofy to have babies. Her uterus was removed even though there was an ovarian remnant left. She is having a false pregnancy, which is when a dog shows signs of being pregnant without being pregnant. I would have another surgery done to remove the ovarian remnant. I hope this helps!

Why is my spayed dog still having phantom pregnancies after surgery?
I would expect the problem not to reoccur a month after the spay surgery, but in some cases it can take up to two month for full effect of the operation. If by then the issue happens again then I would suspect there is a problem, possibly an email topic ovarian tissue some were in the abdominal cavity that was not removed during the spay and is still secreting female hormones. If it does happen again, a blood test to measure these hormones will be the next step.

I would recommend not breeding her anymore and getting her spayed. It is possible that she is unable to get pregnant again. If you would like to know for sure I would take her to a veterinarian for bloodwork to check her hormone level. However with her getting older it might be time to retire her and stop trying to breed her.

It's very unusual for a spayed female to suffer from a phantom pregnancy, i would strongly recommend to take her to the vet in order to get that checked, it may be a case of a remnant ovary or maybe it is an infection of the mammary glands.

Is my dog pregnant after mating with a recently neutered male?
Hello. It is tough to tell without an x-ray or ultrasound exam. It is very possible that the male still had viable sperm in his reproductive tract ( sperm can remain viable for 3-4 weeks in the accessory sex glands of a recently neutered male ). If Minnie was fixed, there is no way she could get pregnant. Her uterus should have been removed in the procedure, preventing pregnancy completely. Are you sure she's pregnant? I would have her checked out by a vet.

If Baby Girl was spayed there is no way for her to get pregnant - the ovaries and uterus are removed in a spay surgery. I would recommend having her examined by your vet: it’s possible that she has a medical problem that has caused abdominal distention. It’s also possible that she has simply gained weight since the surgery - spayed cats have a slower metabolism and tend to be less active so they require fewer calories.

Thank you for more information on your dog and the situation. A dog's pregnancy lasts between 58-68 days. Spaying her is still possible, but it's up to the vet to decide if they want to do it or not. As I said, there are vets who do not like to spay pregnant dogs that are far along in their pregnancy. I would give local vet clinics a call to see they would be willing to spay her.
