How to tell how far along my anxious dog's pregnancy is without a vet?

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Normal pregnancy length in dogs is 60-63 days. If she mated right before adoption then she could be pregnant. Puppy heart beats can be detected on ultrasound at 28 days gestation and we can see their skeletons on X-rays around 50 days. She could be pregnant or she could be suffering from a false pregnancy which occurs after they have a heat cycle from a hormonal imbalance. This imbalance causes the body to think it is pregnant when it actually isn't. The dog can develop mammary glands, produce milk, nest, carry stuffed animals around like babies, act anxious. It resolves with in 2-3 months. I would make an appointment with your Vet to see if you can confirm or deny pregnancy. I wish you the best!

It is possible that this is a false pregnancy, but the only way to really tell is with an x-ray or ultrasound exam. At this point of her pregnancy it may be difficult to feel individual puppies, especially due to size of the puppies & if this is a rather large litter. An increased respiratory rate could be a direct result of her pregnancy putting increased pressure on her diaphragm. I think it is well worth an x-ray to know how many puppies are there. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The only way to confirm pregnancy at 30 days is do have an ultrasound performed to check for placentas and fetal heart beats. Otherwise an X-ray can be done around day 50 to see skeletons. I wish you the best!

Unfortunately you can't tell if this is a real pregnancy or a false pregnancy without an ultrasound at this stage. At 22 days, the fetal heart beats can be detected on an ultrasound. At 45 days, the fetal skeletons can be seen on an x-ray. Depending on the size of the mother and the amount of puppies, the fetuses may be palpated in the final weeks of pregnancy. Unfortunately, there is no way to tell simply by looking at a dog how far along in pregnancy she may be. I recommend that she sees a veterinarian for x-rays of her belly. The fetal skeletons are visible after 45-50 days of gestation. The x-rays will also tell you how many puppies she is expecting. This is helpful information when she is in labor. Puppies can be seen on ultrasound around 28 days pregnant and on X-ray around 50 days. An ultrasound depends on your area. A full abdominal ultrasound in my area (east coast) is around $400 but may be cheaper if just checking for puppies. You would have to call around. Or you can wait until day 50 (from her being let outside) and have your Vet take an X-ray, which is probably only $100. Another option if you do not want puppies, is to have spayed immediately. At 59 days the puppies should be visible. Milk can show up in the mammary glands a day or so or up to a week before birth. Another possibility is a false pregnancy. This is a hormonal imbalance that occurs after a dog is in heat. They are not pregnant but the hormonal imbalance convinces the body that they are. The dog can produce milk, nest, carry toys around like puppies and act anxious. It usually lasts the length of a pregnancy which is 60-63 days. I hope this helps!
