My dog is having bad Prednisone side effects. How do I taper him?

I believe I provided you with the answer to this question before regarding the tapering. Now that I know that he is being treated for MCT, I would recommend speaking to your vet regarding the treatment. Prednisone is not generally considering the gold standard treatment for this condition. If he has not offered you a referral to an oncologist, I would request one if you are looking to pursue any other therapies. One of the best therapies available right now for Mast Cell Tumors is a drug called Palladia. I would love to consult with you concerning Hachi's condition including this drug and a possible tapering schedule if you were not clear on the answer I provided you earlier. The reason that we cannot give specific instructions regarding a taper of the medication is because none of us specifically prescribed it. So legally, within the confines of a veterinary license, a dosage of medication must be instructed by the doctor who prescribed it, as they have an established "veterinarian-client-patient relationship" with you and Tawny. Without a valid "veterinarian-client-patient relationship," it would technically violate this protocol. I hope you've been able to get a hold of your veterinarian. If not, as a general rule of thumb, its reasonable to continue to cut the daily dose in 1/2 every 3-7 days. (for example, going from twice a day to once a day, then from once a day to every other day, then to every 3 days for a few doses.). Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. 30mg of prednisone is a high dose for Ozzy. I would suggest to taper it down slower. There are different protocols to do it and decreasing slowly the dose on weekly basis is probably the most frequently used protocol (for example 20mg every other day for a week then 10mg every other day for a week etc). Another benefit of tapering will be better monitoring of potential relapse of strangles. Sometimes once we reduce the dose of steroids, the skin gets worse, so we can up the dose of prednisone quickly. Do not suddenly take him off the steroids, you should work with the local vet to taper him off of them if you do not want him to be on them. Give them a call to discuss a schedule to taper them off. Your dog should be weaned off Prednisone slowly. In many ways, prednisone is similar to the corticosteroid hormones cortisol and aldosterone produced by the adrenal glands located along each kidney. Because of this, when taking prednisone, the adrenal glands start decreasing their production of cortisol. It would be too shocking for the adrenal glands to find themselves out of the blue in need of producing cortisol in large amounts again, so by tapering the prednisone gradually, the glands are given some time to resume their normal function. The main risk is what is called an " addisonian crisis" or "iatrogenic hypoadrenocorticism" which can be life threatening and can cause the dog to go into shock. This can happen when the prednisone is stopped out of the blue and the adrenal glands are dormant because they weren't given a chance to gradually become active again. When this happens, the dog's potassium and sodium levels get unbalanced. The sodium levels start to fall, while the potassium levels start to rise. High potassium levels can have a detrimental effect on the heart and can lead to circulatory collapse. Affected dogs may appear weak, lethargic, they may vomit, have a low, irregular heart rate and may go into shock and even collapse. Affected dogs need to seek immediate emergency treatment to correct the electrolyte imbalances and possible low glucose levels through supportive care consisting of fluid therapy and careful monitoring. Rapidly-acting corticosteroid medications such as prednisolone sodium succinate or dexamethasone sodium phosphate may be needed. This whole ordeal can be easily prevented by gradually tapering the dog off the steroids. Dogs on prednisone for quite some time, need to be tapered even more gradually. The vet will tell owners how.

Usually a slow taper is recommended for prednisone since there can be side effects from stopping the medication too quickly, but I would expect issues after just one dose. I would however recommend you talk to your veterinarian to make sure Shelby will be okay without the medication and to discuss alternatives - there are many different diseases that are treated with prednisone some of which are life threatening like immune mediated diseases or Addison's disease.

First off, you want to complete the treatment regimen for which they were prescribed so the underlying disease does not recur. Secondly, it is necessary to taper steroids. When a dog takes them orally, their body doesn't need to make them. The gradual taper off signals the body to start making them again. If you stop steroids abruptly, the dog can become sick. The side effects are definitely frustrating, but will decrease as the dose is reduced and finally stopped. As far as diabetes, it is unlikely given the length of time Kaner has been on the steroids.
