My adult dog poops inside right after coming in from outside. Why?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | French Mastiff | Female | spayed | 100 lbs

My adult dog has been pooping in the house for about 7 months now since we moved to a new home. She won't urinate inside, just defecate. We take her out every hour and she is outside long enough to do her business but refuses to, often defecating within 10 minutes of coming back inside.

I would talk to your veterinarian about arthritis. Sometimes when older dogs have arthritis they won't position long enough outside to defecate and they end up coming inside and doing it. Your veterinarian can examine her and see if that is what is going on. I also would recommend a joint supplement for Phoenix as she ages. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
