Why is my dog pooping bone fragments a week after no bones?

Changes in diet commonly cause digestive upsets but the white stools are most likely due to calcium fragments from the bones (they would normally be brittle/crumbly stools) and black stool often indicates bleeding within the bowel (due to infection or scratches from bone fragments). I would monitor very closely for any vomiting, constipation or abdominal discomfort which can indicate a fragment may be obstructing the bowel. I would also recommend small, frequnt meals of a bland diet or familiar kibble to try to manintain gut movement to encourage digestion of any remaining bone fragments

Hello again. As I said earlier, the bone was digested/dissolved. A single piece of cooked bone would have no problems being digested & passing normally through the GI tract. If he has been symptom free for a day, he will continue to be symptom free. If you like, you can continue the pumpkin for another day, but this is not absolutely necessary. He will be fine. First off, good on you for taking Deliliah into the ER vet the day she ate those things! It was exactly the right thing to do. I will say it is a little concerning that she is now struggling to poop and there haven't been any signs of the bone fragments thus far. Given that some is still coming out and she is eating and drinking normally, I would monitor her for now. Give her a tablespoon of canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) mixed in with her food to see if that helps her pass feces easier. If she is still acting this way in another 24-48 hours, or she stops eating, become lethargic, or doesn't pass feces at all, then I would take her into a vet right away.

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm sorry that Ollies is having this problem. Ingesting bones is a very serious issue.... It is likely that the bones are scraping the lining of the large colon which is why you are seeing drops of blood. I don't think that performing an enema would assist in removing any of the bones. There may have been an impaction of stool that they cleared but I highly doubt any bones actually came out. Bones either have to be surgically removed or passed out through regular defecation. Were any x-rays taken to see where the bones were in the GI tract and how many? If not, I suggest you have that done so you know if you have to be worried about any bone remnants or not. This can be extremely serious as any sharp points on the bones could puncture the intestinal lining causing serious peritonitis and possibly death. If he is otherwise acting normally, don't be overly concerned about the blood drops. If he is eating OK I would feed him a couple slices of bread every 8-12 hours to help coat any bone fragments and help push them out. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

It is likely that the bone is causing some constipation and obviously as the bone fragments try to pass they cause lots of inflammation and pain. If you have any lactulose or liquid paraffin at home you could give him two tablespoons three times a day mixed with a bit of food to ease the passage. I would definitely have him checked over tomorrow, starved from midnight in case he needs an enema or x rays. The fresh blood is indicating that the problem is in the lower tract of the gastro-intestinal tract so almost made its way out, however bones absorb a lot of water due to the high Calcium content, and can become extremely hard and difficult to pass. If at any times he should appear lethargic, vomiting I would try to get him seen earlier than tomorrow.

Bones can dissolve in the stomach with enough time. It sounds like Kyro had a bout of pancreatitis that caused the vomiting and diarrhea. If Kyro is now acting normal, I would continue to feed the bland diet and see what happens. It may take a day or two for there to be enough food ingested to create solid poop. If he stops eating, starts vomiting again, or seems lethargic, he should be re-examined by a vet.

The normal gastric transit cycle is about three days (can be more or less), so I would just monitor him for a couple of more days before worrying about the bones getting stuck or causing a problem. While bones have the potential to get stuck in the stomach or intestines, they usually pass through just fine. While I don't advise feeding bones, the truth is that many dogs eat bones (chicken, lamb, beef, goat, fish) on a daily basis for their whole lives and don't ever have any complications from it. I just mention this to help ease any big concern, because more than likely, Ace will be just fine. If they did get stuck, then it would be apparent. A bowel obstruction or damage, would cause vomiting and pain. Ace would not be active and would likely not want to do anything. If you do happen to notice this, then it's best to take him to the vet as soon as possible. Again, it would be quite rare for it to cause a severe complication, so wait it out and I'm sure all will be OK. I hope that helps and all is well with Ace.
