Is it normal for my dog to poop less after switching to adult food?

When puppies are being weaned from their mother, you should mix puppy milk (not cow or goats milk) with canned food to get them to eat it. At Brixy's age, he no longer needs milk because he has teeth. After a certain age (usually 2-3 months) puppies cannot digest milk properly. I would transition him to a puppy food (dry food is fine, but you can add puppy canned food if you wish). It is not a problem for him to poop once daily as long as he is eating, drinking, and active and not having vomiting or diarrhea. Good luck and kisses to Brixy!

That stool looks normal to me. There are a lot of factors that may be causing Chloe to poop more on the new food including the fiber content of the new diet. If she is otherwise acting normally you don't have to switch Chloe's food because defecating more frequently is not an issue as long as the stool is well formed. Because you state that Chloe is not very active you may want to consider a lower calorie food to prevent weight gain. An all canned food diet can also help to prevent weight gain. If she likes to have 1/2 of each then that would be good too. If at any point she develops diarrhea then it could be indicated to try something else. Good luck and have a great day!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I wouldn't worry about the decreased pooping. As long as she is eating, not vomiting and is active it could just be a fluke and she'll go just fine the following day. The weight and size of a dog depends on genetics and breed. Not all dogs weigh the same, so not all puppies weigh 16 kg at 4 months old. I hope this helps!

I would choose the food that he likes the best. Personally the first picture is an ideal stool, so that would be a good choice! I hope this helps and good luck!

Other low fat or weight loss diets that I have had a very good experience with are Hills metabolic weight management diet and the Royal canin GI low fat diet. Good luck!

If he's eating less fiber/volume or has had a change in diet while healing, it can be normal to see a reduction (or increase) in stool size, volume, or frequency. As long as he seems to be going normally when he does go, and doesn't seem in distress, I would just keep an eye on him. If the stool becomes bloody, is frequently diarrhea, Romeo has a sore or tender abdomen, or he seems to be having other symptoms in addition, a recheck with your vet is best.
