My dog plays outside for hours daily. Is that too much exercise?

Pet's info: Dog | Pembroke Welsh Corgi | Male | neutered | 5 months old | 28 lbs

Hi, I don’t mean for this to be a stupid question but since I have corgis I try to keep them active each day. This means they will be in the back yard anywhere from 2-8 hours a day running and playing. I make sure to give them water while they are out there and they do not get their second dish of food until they are done playing outside. Am I giving them too much exercise? Is there a such thing? Everytime I let them out they crash as soon as they get in the house. Haha.

That's not a stupid question! It's great that your dogs get so much exercise! They will likely take enough breaks during the day that they will not over exert themselves, but there are some things that you can do to help keep them happy and safe. As you mentioned, make sure they always have fresh water available. Make sure they have shelter to protect them from the elements, secure fencing to help prevent them from getting lost, that they are microchipped and wearing identification tags in case they get out, and do not leave them outside during extreme heat, cold, or emergency situations. I also recommend speaking to your veterinarian about having them neutered as soon as possible, as this can help reduce behaviours associated with the instinct to mate (such as humping, urine marking, aggression and roaming away from home) and help keep them safe.

It is difficult to say if the activity level is too great for Gnocchi. It largely depends on what type of dog breed he is. For some breeds, two hours a day is nothing and they would still be bouncing off the walls when they get back. Others want nothing more than to lounge on the couch and stay in the air conditioning. The only way you are going to know for sure is to exercise him less for a few days and see if his demeanor brightens. It is entirely possible that there could be something else going on entirely. If he doesn't seem to snap out of it even after you try reducing exercise, you should consider having him examined for any issues that might be difficult to detect. Hope this helps.

My senior dog never stops running. Is he getting too much exercise?

That's a good question. What I find is as long as Bailey wants to go and isn't sore or lame afterwards then let him go. I do recommend limiting jumping and severe rough housing with other dogs as those things are more likely to promote an injury. Keeping senior dogs fit and lean reduces the development and pain of arthritis. When they have strong muscles they support the joints and activity keeps the joints lubricated. Please listen to Bailey and as he ages he will not want to go as long and as far. I still want you to keep him active but don't push him, let him decide on his activity level. Is it safe for my dog to be outside all day and night? What's healthy?

As long as a dog is safe and secure, has adequate shelter/warmth and appropriate access to food and water there is no reason why they must be indoors or outdoors for any set lengths of times. Space to exercise and play is great for dogs and many are happier outdoors as long as they have a comfortable sleeping area

My 11-week Border Collie puppy has too much energy. Am I over-exercising?

Hello. I think with a high energy dog like a BC, the exercise you are providing is fine. You are doing this off-leash, so he is not forced to keep up & can go at his own pace. I would not be concerned about this at all, as if he was in a large yard, he would probably cover this distance multiple times a day. Is my 3-month-old puppy getting too much or too little exercise?

What a cutie! I would follow his lead in the amount of exercise he needs. You are correct in that going running or prolonged jogging in a young dog is not a good idea, as their growth plates are still developing, so we recommend waiting until they are over a year old. Walks, however, and playtime outside with you are fantastic. If he is seeming like he is overly tired or not enthusiastic to continue walking, this would be a cue to slow down/stop. As he gets continued exercise his endurance will increase, just like a person starting to exercise.

How much exercise and alone time does my dog really need daily?

The type of questions you need answered largely depend on your dog's personal needs and personality. In general, a dog should be let out to urinate / defecate at minimum 2-3 daily. In terms of a exercise for a young, medium sized dog, at least two 10-15 minute walks daily would be advisable. Some dogs however will require considerably more exercise then this or they will start to act out by being destructive or anxious. The length of time to leave a dog alone will vary tremendously on the individual. Some dogs can be left alone for 12-18 hours while others don't do well for even a few minutes. I would recommend having Zephur crate trained so that he can have a place that he is comfortable in when he is not being supervised. Hope this helps and gives you some basic information you need.
