My Pit Bull has spots on her coat. Could it be a skin infection?

The red spots and scabbing that you describe could be indicative of either a bacterial or yeast skin infection, or mites/mange. If the prescription shampoo hasn't helped in the past 3 weeks, you should give your vet a call so they can reassess the skin. They may need to do skin scrapes to microscopically check for mites or skin impression smears to microscopically check for bacteria or yeast. Based upon those results, Achilles may need oral antibiotics or another appropriate medication.

This is a skin infection. Medicated baths sometimes help but fair skinned dogs are more prone to allergies and skin infections. To clear this up she probably needs oral antibiotics for several weeks. This is not contagious. Some dogs develop this when laying in a moist area, or on something irritating. Please take her for a veterinary exam to confirm the problem and get medication to treat this. I think this could be due to allergies and it would be crucial to identify the allergic component to try to see if he can improve. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

Pit bulls are known for having sensitive skin and allergies. The infection looks wide spread and I recommend you have her seen by your Vet. They will likely send her home with an antibiotic, something to relieve the itching/licking or chewing and possibly a medicated shampoo. If you want to try a shampoo I like the one below. The picture is a bit blurry and it is hard to see what is going on. In order to diagnosis a skin condition in Bluey, he will need to have a few simple skin tests performed by his veterinarian. Mite infection, fungal infection, or bacterial infection are all possibilities. This needs to be confirmed with an exam and a few simple skin tests. Best wishes to you and Bluey!
