Why is my dog's pink skin showing hair loss on its backside? Mange?

Hi, and thanks for your question. This could be due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). Poor Buster. This could be a local reaction, an allergy, fleas, ringworm, bacterial infection and possibly mange. Mange would be a little less likely as usually they will get patchy hair loss from the eyes and feet/legs as well but not always. I would start by trying benadryl twice a day. See link below. You can also try medicated shampoo like miconahex-triz shampoo 2-3 times per week. If there is crusts, you can try coconut oil, neosporin or even lamisil in the area to see if it improves. Unfortunately, there aren't any good natural products to help treat mange. There is a flea product called bravecto that works well of fleas and also treat some mange which might be a good choice. If these things aren't working or it gets worse, I would consider having your vet taking a look at it before it gets too bad. The worse it gets the more difficult it may be to treat. Hi ! It does not look like mange but a possible skin allergy reaction. I would recommend that you still treat him for fleas/skin parasites to rule out fleas if you haven't and might also need to treat the environment. Flea allergy dermatitis appears to affect skin around the tail and mostly on the lower part of the body.Hope this helps !

Dogs with mange are typically extremely itchy and uncomfortable. This could be some local irritation or infection. Place an e-collar (cone) on Ben to prevent licking or chewing. You can clean the area daily using a diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution. Dry thoroughly afterwards. Treat him and the environment for fleas also if you haven't already done so. If the spot does not show signs of healing or worsens in the next few days, then have him physically examined by your veterinarian. Systemic and/or topical treatment may be indicated.

That looks more like a really inflamed “hot spot” to me. Put an ecollar on him so he can’t lick at it, and take him to your vet. He may need oral antibiotics and a prescription topical treatment. You are absolutely correct that mange or allergies are possible. The doctor may recommend a diagnostic called a skin scrape to check for mites. For now just protect the area from any itching. It doesn’t look really inflamed so I’m not sure there’s much you can do at this point. As a general recommendation, starting Lexi on an omega 3 fatty acid for dogs can help improve skin health and it certainly won’t hurt anything. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is possibly due to allergies. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!
