Why are my dog's paws and legs pink and losing hair? Is it serious?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The tan on the pink part of his paws in normal callus formation over time. In dogs with black paws it is less obvious. The brown discoloration in the nails usually indicates a yeast infection of the nails. If he isn't licking the feet or having any problems you may not have to do anything for the yeast. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is difficult to know without being able to examine her. This could be a benign or malignant growth. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. I can see that Tucker has some redness and hair loss on the top of his paw. This can be a skin infection or caused by certain types of cancers and wounds. It is definitely best to have this seen by a vet as soon as possible. In the meantime, an E-collar or “cone” can prevent Tucker from licking the area and making it more severe. If the pinkish areas are associated where Clio licks, paws, groin, flank regions, then this is a pigment called porphyrin found in saliva. This may indicate your dog has allergies. There is also a rare disorder in dalmations called Dalmation Bronzing Syndrome. It is caused by an inherited metabolic defect in purine metabolism. High levels of uric acid are excreted directly into the urine. Clio may need to have uric acid/purine metabolism evaluated. There may be some other causes of the pinkish color, so have your veterinarian check this out at your earliest convenience. Take care.

It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

Depigmentation can be normal, but if the skin is also thick or crusty or there are other skin lesions it might also be a sign of an autoimmune skin disease. If Iker has scabs or crusts on his paw pads that aren't obvious in the picture, if he seems itchy or if he has other skin problems I'd recommend having your vet take a look.
