Why is my 10-month-old dog a picky eater after tick fever?

Hi there! If Arlo was bitten by a tick a while ago and is not doing well now, then Arlo may need to be tested for tick borne diseases and put on a month or two on antibiotics. If Arlo is not eating anything, then that is a bit concerning. I would ask your veterinarian to test for tick borne diseases Arlo may be infected with. In the mean time, you may try feeding small amounts of heated food to entice him but I would revisit with your veterinarian about testing and also antibiotics if he is positive for any tick borne diseases. There aren't home remedies that will help very much, other than good husbandry, good quality food, and a comfortable environment. Sometimes steroids are needed to suppress the immune system, they will also help with fever. The fever is just a sign that the immune system is working, so it is not always a good idea to make it go away. If she is uncomfortable, you can use a tepid bath to help with the feeling of being hot. You can discuss appetite stimulants with your vet. Or you can use bland human foods like boiled chicken breast, cooked white rice, scrambled eggs, toast, etc.

Most of these diseases though are treated with an oral medication called doxycycline. That is something your veterinarian can prescribe for Julie if they think she is suffering from one of the typical tick borne diseases. Hoping for a speedy recovery!

It depends on the amount of food your are giving her. A dog her size should be eating around 1/4-1/2 cup of food twice daily, so if you are giving her more food than that, then you are likely overfeeding her and she is eating as much as she needs to eat. I am not sure how she can have a high temperature but no fever??? She either has a fever (greater than 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit rectal temp) or she doesn't. Please clarify which is the case with Tusu. It sounds like everything else is well with her, so she could also be becoming a picky eater. You can try high quality foods such as Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Evo or Eukanuba to feed her and see if this makes a difference with her appetite and enthusiasm about food. Unfortunately it sounds to me like Rogue has a medical condition that may be causing his decrease in appetite - he could have a tick borne disease, liver or kidney disease or gastrointestinal problem. I really think it would be best to try to see a vet: you can look into Care Credit as a potential payment option. You could try offering a higher calorie food or mixing canned food in with the dry to tempt him to eat, but if he continues to lose weight you should definitely see a vet.

It is possible he has Ehrlichia again but there are other possibilities as well: other infection (lyme, peritonitis, urinary tract infection), toxin exposure, pancreatitis, immune disease, cancer. Poor girl. Yes this tick infection can definitely cause anorexia (decreased appetite) amongst other problems such as fever, lameness, vomiting, etc. Terramycin IV is not commonly used in veterinary medicine and so I cannot say that I would use this as my first line of treatment.I would simply put Ghontu on Doxycycline oral for this type of infection, steroids and perhaps a recovery food such as Hill's Recovery, Hill's A/D, or liquid Rebound. The Rantac can also help with nausea so that is fine to continue. Please forgive me but you will have to describe what DNS stands for, since this is not a common abbreviation or known drug that we use here in the U.S. Feel free to repost with the definition of medicine spelled out. Also the Conciplex is Vit B which should be continued as long as she is not eating well. I do hope that your fur baby feels better soon!
